This one isnt quite a ‘repair’ but i thought it should be included… At one time i wondered if it could be real, then after being a tech for awhile, i didnt think twice about it.. i’ve seen crazy things people have done to get cars ‘drivable’ ill see if i can find some more.

The spark plugs were melted, compression test shown 17-0-0-19. This is what I found under the head ๐Boys and girls – that’s why you should’t ignore an air flow sensor fault code ๐
Attachments:January 27, 2015 at 9:21 am #653655That first pic is just beautiful and it makes me jealous. I have a Saab rotor that got down to a millimeter before it blew a piston out. Is that a Crown Vic we’re looking at? Probably 1997 and older?
January 27, 2015 at 11:56 am #653681What a flaming mess. I wonder how many of those vanished brake rotor problems belonged to customers who swore there was no grinding at all going on.
I wished that over the years I had taken pics of some of the stuff I’ve seen.One of them was a brand new car that never had one oil change and the engine oil turned into cold tar at a little over 20k miles.
The engine was wiped and with the oil pan sitting on the floor full of oil I could stick a 3 foot long prybar into the oil, walk off, and come back 30 minutes later to find the prybar standing upright where I left it.Another one was a 4k miles rental car that someone felt needed an engine overhaul. They must have used an entire case of RTV sealant because that stuff was oozing out of every gasket on the top end. Not really oozing but protruding in globs is a better phrase.
They also broke the high pressure line from the AC compressor, wrapped it back together with electrical tape, and then coated the entire splice area with what looked like an entire tube of RTV.
We found out later the running problem was a bad TPS switch. ๐January 28, 2015 at 7:21 am #653766What’s a hose clamp? I don’t know either:
Why yes we can lift that 14000lb four wheel drive stretch limo on a 6000lb belly lift:
I lifted this Hyundai Santa Fe just high enough to shake it on the lift to make sure it’s solid on the lift arms. I pushed down on the RF wheel and the strut fell out. The customer told me that this wouldn’t have happened if I would have just done the oil change with the vehicle on the ground. There is such a thing as being right and stupid at the same time.
Attachments:January 28, 2015 at 7:29 am #653767There was a recall on 03-05 Crown Vic steel wheels because they were prone to cracking at their welds. The pic isn’t that great, but the yellow paint is intended to show where the crack started to open up. What was cool about that particular rim was that it would hold 20 PSI even with that crack in place. I could air the tire up and you could watch that crack expand to about a ยพ” gap, if not a little more. It would deflate fast and the leak would seal back up at 20 PSI. I donated that wheel to the local tech school I went to and looked at it a few months later and it was still holding some air pressure.
Attachments:January 28, 2015 at 7:36 am #653769This one probably isn’t so outstanding since I’m sure we’ve all seen failed spring helpers, but I really liked how these ones didn’t do their job. The car was a 2000 or 2001ish Deville and this might have actually been the least of its problems. You could see witness marks where the helpers really were mounted 180ยฐ apart at one point. This was one of those cars where I might have actually wrote, “replace car with known good vehicle.” on the work order.

This is possibly the coolest thing I’ve ever seen happen on a brake lathe.
I pulled this rotor off an 07 F150. I can’t explain it being what it is and why it didn’t cause a shake. I don’t recall seeing any damage in the rim to match the rotor.
Me, “Why do you keep a steak knife under the hood?”
Customer, “To check the oil level stupid!”January 28, 2015 at 3:06 pm #653787After a test drive I noticed the brakes feel a bit ‘spongy’. I replaced the broken lever and made the customer angry – “Why did you do that? it was fine ! ”

That reminds me of a story my friend told me some time ago. He was working at a gas station. A lady walks in and buys 5 liters of oil….5 min later she buys another 5l of oil. The third time she wanted to buy more oil my friend asked her whats going on. She replied – “My housband told me to regulary check the oil level and there is no oil in the engine”. What happened is – She had a E38 BMW and after opening the filling cap she didn’t see any oil ๐ so she put 10l of oil in it so the engine was filled all the way to the valve cover ๐
January 28, 2015 at 6:01 pm #653792Your oil story reminds me of my uncle Doobie’s car, (I really call him uncle Doobie. He likes his weed.) A long time ago, he had one of those little Oldsmobile Omegas with a little V6 in it. I think it was a 2.8. He asked me to change oil on it while I was fixing his brakes and I got something like two and a half to three gallons out of the pan. When I put the right amount of oil back into it, it started knocking like a jackhammer.
