F150 diesel swap

Hello, I have a 1995 Ford F150 4X4 heavy half ton, with a 302 EFI, and the E4od automatic trans. Now I am also buying a 1989 Ford F350 4×4 mainly due to tha fact that it has a pair of Dana 60 axles that will fit in my stock suspension mounts. This brings me to my question, now I know that the axles, and seeing as my transfer case is toasted, the transfer case will move over to my truck without a hitch, but what about the 7.3 L IDI diesel, and 5 speed manual trans? I know that the difference in years yields no difference in chassis, but not wheather the stocker diesel ECM will bolt in, and connect properly. In case the question arises, I am planning on swapping the entire system over, I know the frame will house it with a motor mount change, but not if I can get the electrical to do it’s job. So what are your thoughts, should I try, or will it be too much hassle, and should I go with my original plan of mounting a built Ford 460 big block?

not 100 percent but i do think that the whole wiring harness will have to be changed

I had figured that much, and thank you for taking the time to look at my topic, I will most likely be swapping the entire wiring harness over from the diesel.

Unless the frame and body of the donor truck are completely shot, why not put the diesel truck on the road instead?

As for the swap, you’ll have to replace every piece of rubber fuel line with new rubber lines compatible with diesel fuel. Diesel fuel will eventually destroy rubber meant for gasoline.

Another thing I’m wondering about is your front suspension. The diesel is considerably heavier, and you could be heading into dangerous and unsafe waters if your 1/2 ton springs aren’t rated for the extra load. And your ball joints, bushings, brakes and the entire steering system is going to have to deal with this extra load as well.

I do plan to use the F350’s suspension, and fuel line’s. But to the reason why, the body is toast on the F350, it got to boned, and the body of my F150 is aside from rust, perfect.

OK, I misunderstood. Your opening post sounded (to me) like you were going to mate the F350 axles to your existing suspension.

You do realize, I hope, that with the full F350 suspension, your 1/2 ton is going to ride like a Conestoga wagon. Not a whole lot of fun if you spend a lot of time in the truck every day.

This sounds like a very ambitious project, and I hope it goes well for you, without too many unforeseen snags and bottomless money holes. I’d be interested in reading your updates.

I drive a tractor trailer by trade, so I know a harsh ride lol. Yeah it is ambitious, and the suspension swap will be a bit temporary, as I want to make the truck an off road trail truck. Also I may have been a little vague in detailing exactly what will be done, so it isn’t your fault if you didn’t know about the suspension swap. I’m going to keep yall updated on the project. Most likely going to use a new radiator and fuel line’s, as well as new fuel pumps. Thank you, and I’ll keep you posted.

The F350 axles are definately not attaching to your F150 without quite a bit of work. Are you planning on converting from TTB to leaf springs? I think the steering is quite a bit different as well.

If your other option is a big block gasser, your gonna be pretty disappointed in that 7.3 IDI. Have you driven a non-turbo 7.3?

The doner truck has the same coil beside shock set up on the front end as I have on my truck. I also drove a 6.9 L IDI, non turbo, and while it didn’t have a launch like a power house big block, it had low end grunt, and I am wanting that. My truck is going to be an off road beast, and I need the power to be in the low end of the RPM range.

Something fishy going on there then…. Pretty sure the first time Ford put coils on a 4x F350 was 2005 or so. Everything before that was leafs. Only F150’s and broncos used coils.

truck had a few mods done to it already, guy only wants to sell it as it got T boned, and he needs a new truck, works for me, I don’t need the body or frame.
