F150 cruise control

I have a 99 F150 with like 155,000 miles. My cruise control is very intermittent. I have replaced the release switch that’s on the master cylinder. Sometimes I can turn it on and it works fine, other times it won’t turn on at all. Or it’ll turn on then turn off right away. Would it be the control switches? The cruise control box? Throttle cable?

Could be servo, controller, or brake pedal switch (not the master cylinder automatic one).

First I’d verify the brake fluid level is at the proper amount, anything over, and this could trigger your problem, as well as under. Then I’d yank the speed control servo and visually inspect it. It could be slipping, or the motor could be failing for the same reason my own croaked. Which I actually just wrote about last night here(halfway down):
        http://ericthecarguy.com/kunena/12-What-Are-You-Working-On/50288-1995-ford-f-150-xlt-302ci-5-0l-4wd

It is located against the driver’s side fender near the firewall inside the engine bay. You should be able to freely spin the drive motor without much effort from the larger connected plastic gear, and nothing that feels like it’s catching when you spin it.

If that doesn’t show anything significant I’d probably just replace the brake switch, well, just because it’s cheap and the next likely culprit, after that you’d need to do the FSM procedure for verifying certain resistances and voltages which I recall seeing in a couple of F-150 forum threads for this.

I’ve really never heard of one of these cruise control micro-controllers failing, it’s ALWAYS something else. As it’s intermittent, that makes it that much more unlikely. So you can just about rule out the main cruise control controller.

I don’t know if this is related to your problem. I have a 2001 ford f150. If I remember correctly there was a recall concerning a cruise control issue..I don’t remember what years it covered..I had mine repaired at the dealer..Keep in mind that I never used my cruise control, so I had no problems..Maybe something to check out..Good luck!!

The recall of which you speak, he already mentioned:

And that would be the same thing, with better diagrams.

If the brakes work good, the brake fluid level is good, and that new brake release switch is on tight with no leaks, then you can just move on to the rest, which is likely due to this being intermittent:
                1. A servo issue
                2. A slack issue with the servo cable, there is an adjustment clip just before the plastic cover dead center to the engine. Pliers or pick will do to get any possible extra slack out(a slight amount of slack should remain present).
                3. The brake switch inside the cabin has an issue.
                4. The clock-spring connections have an issue.

Had the same problem with the F-150 forums, most seemed to be pointing to that same recall, even though most had it taken care of years prior on FORD’s dime. But it was remembered well since it actually caused fires..

If anyone else comes across this thread, and see’s this, you can check if you’re vehicle has had this or any other recall done or pending by going here (for any FORDs):

On newer cars these days not sure about a ’99 model but never know

The cruise control uses the ABS system aswell to help control vehicle speed at the wheels and if something malfunctions or breaks in that system may cause cruise control to stop working

                  Dont know just a thought

But i suppose that if your car doesnt have ABS this comment is invalid

A lot of good suggestions here and I have little to add other than don’t go blindly replacing things. Do what you can to follow the suggestions here to see if you can diagnose the problem before you purchase parts.

Good luck and keep us posted.
