I was watching this interesting video about F1 wheel stud technology and a question came up. Is there something specific they do to keep that one nut from cross-threading?
Does the extended stud line the nut up in such a way that it prevents cross threading?

I think it’s a matter of design and tolerances, and therefore, manufacturing cost. The more precise the fit, the less chance there is of the nut being cocked and misaligned.

When Martin Brundle threads the nut on by hand, you can see that the outer portion of the wheel nut is a precise fit over the hub extension, ensuring that the threaded end is aligned.

It makes your typical road car lug nut look like stone age technology.

Sounds like a good theory to me.
It’s funny how much detail goes into little things.

You can see the unthreaded portion of the stud that the nut slides onto which ensures the nut is straight. The only way to cross thread is to go on crooked. I have been putting lug nuts on by putting the nut in the socket and going on that way. I haven’t crossed one in years, and one reason is because I make sure it’s straight before pulling the trigger. Of course I’ve been doing it for a long time.
