Extreme Hesitation

      Greetings!
I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey EX w/DVD ~170,000 miles. This thing has become almost undriveable, especially when it’s cold. There are times that it shows no CEL o;r any other lights. And other times when it will show the CEL, others it will show CEL and TCS. At one point, the CEL and TCS were flashing. One day, the D gear indicator light started flashing on my way home from work. That weekend, I changed out the ATF and have not had that issue again. But, now it hesitates incredibly badly. Before it warms up, I can hardly touch the accelerator without nearly killing the engine (sometimes it will die completely, but will start back up). And, once I can actually put it in gear and attempt to drive, it will bog down and not move over 2 mph for 50-100 feet then suddenly take off. Also, I can usually hold the break and press the accelerator then release to get a better take off, but not always. Once I have driven it at least 15 miles, it will usually accelerate normally. But, even then, it will occasionally bog down, but not nearly as bad as when it is cold.

What I have done so far:
      1. cleaned EGR
      2. cleaned PCV
      3. cleaned EGR passages
      4. cleaned MAP sensor
      5. disconnected exhaust ahead of CAT
      6. disconnected TPS
      7. disconnected MAP
      8. disconnected purge valve
      9. bypassed purge valve
      10. power balance tested
      11. cleaned AND replaced spark plugs
      12. replaced fuel pump and strainer (2nd time since we purchased vehicle that it has gone out, yes I did test it – about 12psi and would not pump unless I attempted to crank engine, not just with key turned on)
      13. replaced main relay (also 2nd time since we purchased vehicle that this has gone out)
      14. changed air filter

And, probably some other things, too, just can’t recall right now. None of the above made any difference for more than a couple of miles. I was thinking maybe the fuel injectors. Perhaps one of them (or more) is bad somehow. Possibly a small crack in the electronics that closes up when it heats up enough or something else equally elusive. But, I’m not sure exactly how test them or if it would even be worth testing. Maybe it would be best to just pick up one or two new ones and swap them out one by one and see if anything improves.

What do you suggest? My initial thought was transmission, but I’m convinced that is not the case. When I manage to get the engine to behave normally, I can make it spin the wheels on asphalt. Don’t think it could do that if the tranny was slipping.

Oh yeah! Almost forgot – When driving down the highway, it’s OK unless I push it, eg: try to pass another vehicle. At that point, it will bog down and accelerate very very slowly, like 45 up to 60 in about a mile and a half. If I push the accelerator harder, it bogs down even worse.

My first thought is it’s an Odyssey with high mileage, the transmission is taking a crap, perhaps torque converter is locking up, and not releasing. This is a pretty common problem with the Odyssey’s.

What codes were stored when the CEL was set? If it was the P0740 I would be very suspicious of the trans. Have you considered exhaust restriction, such as a plugged up catalytic converter? Just a thought, but I would thoroughly inspect the trans, and be absolutely sure that isn’t the problem before looking elsewhere. It is pretty unusual for an Odyssey of that vintage to go much over 150 – 160 k miles without the trans failing.

I agree with Tomh, it could be anyone of these items he has listed. .

Has the transmission fluid been changed recently or condition checked? It might be need a top-off or for a pan drop and filter change.

Has the engine or transmission ever been subjected to a flush by a quick change retailer?

Honda transmissions don’t have pans or serviceable filters.

Honda’s are one of the few makes that are really sensitive to generic fluids. So if non-Honda fluid was used that would be a good first step, to do at least one more drain and fill with Honda trans fluid. Fluid level should be checked with the engine off and the trans in park, obviously on a fairly level surface. Once it’s within the indicated level, it’s good.

The flashing D indicates a transmission code. A tech level scan tool is generally needed to access transmission codes.

DTCs – Non-Readable, at least with all the multiple computers and scanners that have been hooked to it in the last few months. They all either say No Link, or just sit and run trying to connect. So, that route is out of the question for all codes.

Have pulled the exhaust system loose ahead of the CAT and made no difference for more than a few moments.

I guess it could be the tranny, but I find it hard to believe considering that it shows no slippage and has no problems once it is heated up. But, I was going to see about trying to get it checked out by a guy down the street who does this kind of stuff a lot more than I do.

Finally got this problem fixed! The small rubber grommet on top of the fuel pump, inside the sending unit assembly, had split and was flaking off. Replaced it after a long and stressful search to find one. Now, runs almost as good as new.

Absolutely amazing! I was going to suggest a drive belt issue but so glad it was an easy o-ring/grommet! Take all forum advice to the maintenance shop when you have $ and time and keep the Odyssey EX fresh. They’re a beautiful minivan.
