My exhaust had become very loud emanating from between the front seats. I located a break immediately before the cat and also after the cat. I repaired both leaks with a straight pipe. Loud exhaust has occurred again – same general area – I think it is coming from a mesh encircled portion of the exhaust close to the engine – problem is I can’t see through the mesh – I assume a pipe is inside the mesh – is this pipe/mesh portion of the exhaust some kind of a pivot point to accommodate movement of the engine? I am thinking this weekend I will cut open the mesh and investigate its contents – furthermore I am thinking of replacing that portion of the exhaust entirely but I am concerned what its purpose is – can I replace it with a straight through pipe? Appreciate any advice.

      Thanks,

      Milty

The “mesh” section is a flexing point for the exhaust system between the manifold(s) and Cat(s).
Having no movement in that area could cause issues with the manifold(s), connections and Cat(s).
Can you replace the flex joint with a solid pipe….
It is your vehicle and your free to do as you please.
Personally, I would just put a new flex joint.

FWIW, I recently bought a car whose flex section had been replaced by straight pipe. Lasted maybe 6 months. And I agree with nightflyr that if the new welds don’t break, something more important will.

Ditto. The manufacturers would not have added complexity and cost unless it fixed some issue.

The flex joint contains accordion-style pipe under the mesh that allows the system to flex under different conditions instead of breaking. Also, the joint with the spring bolts is designed to pivot about the gasket as the engine tilts under load.

Appreciate the imfo..I think I found a universal flex pipe on the web …need to measure my exhaust diameter …see if it will work …dont want o break cat or exhaust manifold.

              Thanks
