Hey guys this is my first post so take it easy on me lol, I recently had my power steering rack replaced do to a bulk seal leak so bad that I would loose a resivior of power steering fluid in 25 minutes of driving.

Anyway during installation, the exhaust pipe broke right after the catalytic converter and the pipe broke clean off the flange. Ive tried to think of many ways to fix this cheaply for now as i am a broke ass student who just went through his first year auto tech training in Canada.

I currently just have long hose clamps holding it together but it has an attendency to seep in through the air system as it still leaks allot. so i have to keep it on recirculate.
Either way here is my solution, pictires included. I want to cut off the flange after the break so theres no flange and then i want to wrap a tin can over the pipe to cover the diatance and seal it with with high temp gasket sealer all around the in side of it. And tighten it down really tight with hose clamps.

I also included a pic of the cutter I will use if it seems like it will work

Does anyone think this would work??

Thanks in advance, i know its a red neck fix. But until I can get a new pipe, its what i might have to do.

Do you have a salvage yard near you? I know in the U.S. you cannot legally buy a catalytic converter from a salvage yard, but I don’t know if you can buy the cats in Canada (probably not), but at least you may be able to buy a good portion of the exhaust.

Anyway…you may be able to get the muffler and the rest exhaust pipe back to the cat at a salvage yard on the cheap…

Also, don’t discount EBAY… I recently put on an entire exhaust on my winter beater from manifold to muffler for $340 (This included a new cat and new muffler). On another car I did it for $125 (and that included cat, but not the muffler).

Here is an example from Cat back…

        Exhaust

As far as the tin can… well, you are best to buy a piece of pipe from your local auto parts store… As far as High Temp sealer… just forget about that… a short piece of pipe and two clamps should not set you back more than $20.00…

        Good luck

I recently had a similar problem with my explorer’s muffler rusting out. I did basically the same thing you did, only I welded straight pipe cat back in place of the muffler.
The best solution I can offer is to weld (or clamp) some straight pipe and nix the tin can and high temp.
That being said however, I’m a cynic, and my truck is my baby, so I tend to go a little overboard lol

I’m a bit confused, did the flange break off the catalytic converter, or did it break off the pipe BEHIND the converter?

Tin can = not worth the effort it takes to put it in there.

For a quick repair, I would try to find a short bit of pipe just a bit smaller around that the existing one that you can beat into it, then I would weld the flange back onto that new bit of pipe, and bolt it all back together, with a wide band style clamp holding the old pipe onto the new bit that you beat into it. Of course, this requires having access to a welder, but it is probably about the best temporary fix you can do on the cheap.

The pipe broke right after te cat, after the cat is a flange. It snPped off the flange rigtt after the cat.

Thanks for te help guys, the general consencus i see is a tin can is a no go, but a pipe yes

A pipe maybe, but it’ll have to be short enough to NOT get into the cat and ruin the inside of it, and you’ll still need a way to reattach the flange. Best if you can get access to a welder.

I got a pipe the same size and just clamped it straight on. Its not going over or under the l pipe. The leak seemed to stop, allot more gas is coming out of the tail pipe. Like ALLOT. Although, all of a suddon 2 problems started to occur along with installing that pipe. Number 1: there is a very low frequency oscillating humming coming from the engine bay, and i mean low, like subwoofer low. Number 2: clicking or almost like tapping noise coming directly from the engine, and it gets louder when you give it more gas. These may be seperate issues, i mean this thing is old. It just hit 200 miles yesterday.

If there is still a bit of an exhaust leak there, it can make a sound that is almost like a tapping. I’ve had exhaust manifold leaks sound so much like tapping that we thought there was a problem with a connecting rod, or wrist pin in the engine.
