My 98 civic ex has developed a metal buzz only noticeable when taking off from a dead stop. Nothing at idle.

If I tap gas pedal quick at idle I can somewhat reproduce it. Inspection under the vehicle doesn’t show any metal heat shield rubbing.

I’m wondering if this rubber hanger not being straight can contribute to what I’m hearing?

Here’s a quick video I made while revving engine at idle. This was right under drivers seat. Can barely hear it. More audible inside the car.

Most likely a part of the exhaust system. Bang around on the pipes with the wooden end of a hammer. If you have jack stands and a friend, put it up on jack stands and look around while the friend operates the gas pedal.

Will try. Think the hanger being stretched forward has anything to do with it?

The camera angle is not the greatest but as long as metal does not touch metal it is OK. You may be able to just shake things with your hands. Also thump around the head shield on the exhaust manifold under the hood.

I’ve tried shaking things with my hands and can’t reproduce same sound.

The manifold heat shield seems pretty solid as well too.

              I’m stumped

Perhaps the rattle is inside the muffler??

Ok I noticed the spring bolts on the cat engine side are rotted and I can even move the head of them very slightly by hand. I’m guessing that’s not good.

Should I replace the cat or see if an exhaust shop can weld in a new flange because it looks pretty rotted

They quoted me $90 to weld in a flange on the header down pipe. Cat side seems fine. Here’s a pic. Surprised it’s even still attached. Should I go through with it or replace the pipe?

They said they’d weld a new flange on the cat too but it’s fine. I don’t know if I trust that for some reason. What if the process clogs it up or something

Don’t think you will hurt the CAT. Just make it sealed and stable. Either do it yourself or have it done.

Ok I’ll just have them do it. I’m curious, why would the flanges be offset instead of more parallel. Hard to tell in the pic, but they’re not entirely horizontal where the bolts meet. Wonder if it helps with the way to exhaust moves?

So they actually didn’t replace the bad flange, they cut both out (even the good one on the converter) and welded in a small flex pipe.

I’m weary of this, and wasn’t what they originally said so they only charged me $40. But now if the cat goes I’ll need it cut and welded in. I’m pissed

No worries. The exhaust pipe was kinda crusty anyway. If the CAT fails you would probably want to replace both anyway.

                              Did it fix the buzzing??

It did. Car seems quieter. Guess part of me just wants things as close to oem but at least the problem is solved

Weld on the right doesn’t even look complete lol

I gotta say I like it. No bolts, springs and flanges to deal with.
