Eric I thought it’d be interesting if you talked about the relationship between a DIY’er and a professional mechanic.
For instance I remember when I started getting into doing my own repairs, when a job I either couldn’t tackle yet or didn’t have right tools came about I’d seek a professional. Then with my acquired knowledge id be on a better level in terms of lingo but there’s usually be some kind of condescending remarks by the “pro” even if my info was valid.
For instance, went for an oil change once and told him my car calls for 3.5q with the filter. He proceeded to say no he’s adding 4q because he’s always done it for my particular make/model (98 civic ex)
I said no I’m pretty anal about my car and Honda recommends 3.5q and my old mechanic always added that no problem and it ALWAYS was at the full line after. He still wouldn’t do it. Said I didn’t know what I was talking about etc. it was unbelievable. I couldn’t just go somewhere else as my car was on the lift drained of oil.
Finally he put 3.5q checked and it was to the full line. He then didn’t say much as he knew I was correct, I paid and left never to go there again.
But the point is I’ve noticed professionals and DIY’ers seem to clash about info, where in some instances the DIY knows some facts the pro just doesn’t have the time to look up etc as they’re working on different cars daily.
Figured it could be an interesting topic to get both perspectives of the spectrum
