Indeed it is, and to be honest I struggle with that sometimes. It’s one thing to worry about my fans. It’s quite another to worry about how to integrate those ‘big names’ into the mix and still maintain integrity. It’s an issue I never anticipated. Now that it’s here however, I plan on doing everything I can to stay focused on the people that put me here in the first place while still earning some money for Fairmont parts.

Eric, keep doing what you’re doing. With any great thing, like your Youtube channel, there will always be people that disagree with how you do business. You have over half a million subscribers and they are here for a reason.
I really appreciate the videos and personally have saved money because of them and totally understand that making videos like this one are necessary.

All I can say is that at least you didn’t pass this off as a real fix for a problem like many many others do on the Internet. (“Transmission doesn’t work?! Add this reptile oil derivative and fix it!”)
Just a note of support for Eric. You clearly stated that it is a paid commercial. Some people complaining that you sold out to “the man?” No. I have done things because I got paid to do them; some of these things probably wouldn’t occur to me otherwise. I don’t know if the stuff actually does what it claims, but I’m gonna run a bottle of it anyway. I have no intention of doing a “before and after.” BTW the stuff has been around forever.
I think it’s awesome you got paid to make the commercial! More ETCG for us!
Second on the Regane. When my parents owned the auto parts store, up until the mid 90s, some customers would swear by certain products. Others thought they were garbage.
I’m sure Gumout had a pretty decent R&D program to have been in business this long. Either that or really good marketing. The borescope project would be a cool thing to do.. If I drive out to Ohio, you can try it on my oddy and make a video of it. 🙂
Thanks again to everyone who understands and supports me with this video. Now for an update. I’ve run through almost the entire tank of gas since I poured in the Gumout Regane. I must say that the engine does run smoother and idles better since I used the product. I’m not normally one for these in tank cleaners but this one seems to do as it claims. So if you’re wondering about my results and my feelings about the product, it is indeed something I can stand behind and may very well help your high milage engine run smoother.

Keep up the good work Eric, I fully support you making this promotional video. If they can help support you, your family and grow ETCG, then do as many of them as you want or desire.
Personally I think the ad is brilliant because you are putting it in the Acura Vigor. This isn’t like some run of the mill commercial on TV for a product where a paid spokesman/woman who is utilizing the product on a car they don’t own, drive, have never seen or will never see again.
I also think you did a really good job explaining the product and what it is intended to do when used properly.

What you need to do is the pros/cons and before and afters, but some times you don’t have the luxury in doing that and I understand that, the problem with me was that it sound scripted and cheesy. It’s not that It was a paid add,I have no problems if you support the product, it just seemed disingenuous. If they let you do a compare and contrast that would be fantastic, but if the company doesn’t allow you to do that, it just seems fishy. If you had the option of testing the product and give a pseudo unbiased opinion that would be perfect. I would love to see a before and after on a dyno see if you gained any lost horse power. I drive a Zx2 from 1999, this product may indeed help, but I like to do my research before I buy a product and that’s why I go to you.
Can you do another gumout video and do a pro/cons of the product?
Here is a idea, could you do an add for your trusted tools for a profit?
On the other hand E manuals make sense, because they are your product. You are providing a service. In many ways they are better than a physical manual and I would support them, if they were my car. That brings it to another problem, it’s just you and it would be impossible to do manuals for all cars in existence. Thank you for your time. This is just my 2 cents.

I don’t think they were opposed to me to a ‘real’ review on the product. The reality is that I just didn’t have the time. I only had one day to turn the video around and to be honest, I don’t think it was that bad all things considered. Scripted, yes, but that’s how these go sometimes.
As a follow up I can say that my Vigor is running better since I used the product. So yes, I could endorse Gumout Regane outside of the video.
As for making another video, I think I’ll stay away from the topic for a bit and possibly revisit it at a later date when I have the proper time to produce a video.
As for the VManuals, I’ve been getting crap for that for years. Just check the comments to those videos. That said, with as many people that follow me, it’s not surprising that some of them have issue with the things I do. My plan is to keep moving forward and making the best videos I can.

Thanks for the response. maybe you could release a DVD with your popular repair videos on it, and some behind the scene stuff. I bet some people would buy it, heck I would. plug it into my laptop and bring it to my car. A lot of youtubers are doing that and it maybe be viable for you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I gave up on the DVD option long ago. It’s a dead format in my opinion. I feel ‘hard copies’ are a thing of the past. It’s also a PITA to deal with production of the DVD’s as well as shipping. Not to mention the expense and computer time it takes up. For those reasons I’ve been selling digital delivery versions of my videos for some time.
Lately I’ve been releasing behind the scenes videos to Premium Members of this website. There will be 2 more this month.
In short, I believe I have it covered for now. Thanks again for the suggestion.
I thought I’d weigh in on this exciting debate…
I trust Eric completely. Over the last few years I’ve learned so many things, and it’s given me the confidence to buy cars that are cheaper, feeling that “hey, I can fix anything that is likely to break on this since Eric showed me.”
And it shows integrity that Eric is able to post on this forum and address the concerns that some people have, and come out and say that he’d still endorse it even if he wasn’t being paid for it.
As for me, there’s a 50% off sale on Gumout at Canadian Tire this week. So I’m going to stock up.
I have no problem with sponsored videos. As long as the sponsors aren’t getting Eric to sell things I completely can’t afford. I’m a sucker for advertising. 🙁
