I’m sure this was a bit unexpected but I think it will work out well. What are your thoughts?
I made an account just to talk about your car purchase! I think it is a cool project! I’ve been a fan of Fox Mustangs for a LONG time and I’m currently working on my “dream project” a 1992 Notch back with a 408 in it… It takes LOTS of $$$ if you want to do it right, so I’m taking my time… I hope you do your car right and don’t cut corners like most people do with swaps.. I like your ideas with keeping the car stock, but I would implore you to look into getting a wrecked 89-93 Mustang as a doner. Are you planning on going injected? You talked about sticking with the auto, but then you stated that you liked to drive a stick! I’m telling ya, go with you gut and get the stick! You can still keep the sleeper look with a stick, they put sticks in the wagon car, if I recall anyway… Also, while you’re swapping V8 car parts, I would look into a 94-95 mustang 5 lug conversion, better wheel options, better brakes… Really looking forward to seeing what you do… Would like to know more plans… Have fun and stick with a budget, don’t go wild all at once like a lot of guys do… I hope you don’t mind my $0.02 Eric, if you’d like more ideas, I’d be happy to share!
Thanks very much for your input. I too have seen people spend money in all the wrong places which is why I hope to show a ‘sensible’ way to go about this. My plan is to actually get into the ‘math’ of modifications so that people have a better understanding of how to make better power, not just more power.
A Ford :woohoo: and a potential mustang :woohoo: :silly:

I’m convinced Eric saw my post about getting a muscle car and was tired of hearing about my mustang issues so decided to go American lol. I’m lookin forward to this new series of vids!

Thanks Eric! =D
Yep, that’s what did it. ๐Ÿ™‚
Funny what time can do to a car to make it cool…

That was one of the most garden variety cars of its time, akin to the modern day Crown Victoria which graces the highways to Florida going at 55 mph in the right lane with the turn signal blinker left on…

My Dad bought one of those cars new for my grandmother in 1979 (the mercury version)… As I recall he said he got a great deal on it… I want to say he got it for just under 10k (and that was the Mercury, more bells and whistles).

I also recall a news broadcast in the 80’s that said the Columbus, OH Police department was happy when they found out they were getting new cars and getting rid of their Fairmonts… Their complaint was that the interior was too small… Probably the cops who got them were used to driving the big land yachts of the 1970’s…. But you didn’t look like you had any issues with it..

The only thing that could surprise someone more would be to have gotten the wagon version and turned that into your “Draggin Wagon” and blow away people with that grocery getter..

I am very surprised at how good of condition that is as well… Sounds like your stereotypical Grandma car that was just driven to church and the Grocery store…

Looking forward to seeing more of this!

-Karl
I actually looked for a wagon but couldn’t find one. They also made an ‘El Camino’ version of this platform that I would have liked even better. I was just happy it was a 2 door and in such good shape. I LOVE the car. It’s a real treat to drive.

What can I say?
Great choice, both eastethically, strategically, affectively ๐Ÿ™‚
She’s in great shape, I’m amazed you found her out of the whole bunch of oldies.

Great camera angles you got for the drivearound, how many cameras do you have now???? :woohoo:

I really hope that before upgrading her to a sleeper you’ll take the time to service her, to show all of us the intricacies of a fully “analog” ๐Ÿ˜† car

HER CARB!
I want to see it naked! You showed so much of her and still the air filter (the underwear ๐Ÿ˜† ) wasn’t removed….I can’t see the time when you do look into that carb! :cheer:

And what about your expression while driving?
Almost identical to that loving one when you last drove your Galaxie, AWESOME!

You seem to have turned younger again, really!

Great video all in all!

P.S: you have a message in your biz mailbox, HINT HINT! ๐Ÿ˜†

Have a good afternoon and evening

I have 2 new GoPro’s now which are awesome. That last sequence took about 6 trips down that road to complete. I think it was worth the effort. I hope to use those more in the future.

I LOVE the car. It does bring back a lot of memories, especially of my old Ford. In fact, this build will be a smaller version of what that one was going to be.

As for email, it’s been a busy day and I haven’t had much time. Tomorrow I edit, so it will probably be Monday before I get to my email. Talk with you then and thanks for your input.
Eric! This is a great car. I have to agree that grandpa fresh is absoulutely the way to keep this car. It’s too nice to really cut up. You could strap a turbo to that I6 but I think guys like MCM have covered that subject in depth. So do what you want, I will support you all the way. I’m not a Ford guy but I love anything from 1975-87. So do what you want.

Although I would name her “Jane” because it’s a plain Jane vehicle. Because you keep calling Oliver “her” and I’m not sure he/she/it would like that.

Regards,
Nicholas Clark
I don’t think it minds the ‘gender confusion’. I think it’s just happy to be driven. There really isn’t much available for the 6 cylinder. There’s more than enough stuff for a 5.0 however. I have no intentions of cutting the car up. I just want a fun project to use in my videos. Something other than the usual Honda.

Great to hear from you Nick. If you make it to next year’s Meet Up we’ll have to take it for a spin.
Hello Nicholas!

Interesting topic about the name.
I was a little taken off guard about the name, to the point I was not sure I understood it correctly ๐Ÿ˜†

But….what about Olivia? ๐Ÿ™‚

Reminds me of Olivia Dunham from the Fringe tv show, and also of course of Popeye’s girlfriend ๐Ÿ˜‰

However, if I was a car, whatever gender (he/she/it), I’d just be flattered and honored to be Eric’s car! :woohoo:
Eric, I want to start off by saying I absolutely love the car. I think you made a very interesting choice, it was a complete surprise for me! I also absolutely love the idea of keeping the outside looking pretty much stock, I think that a subtle drop on the car will also make it look great.
That being said, I was rather disappointed when you said you want to keep it automatic. The second I saw that your car is automatic I immediately got excited for an auto to manual video. I also think that a manual would do very little to detract from the sleeper look that you’re going for, assuming you do the clean and professional job that I know you would do.
Also, I would love to donate a little money to your project. If you set up an easy donation system, i’m sure that many of your viewers would be willing to donate a little cash to repay you for all of your dedication and great videos. If just 100 people donated 20 bucks, you’d have another two grand right there!
-Stay Dirty
I’m going to keep it an automatic. This isn’t the last car that I’ll own or use in a video, and at some point I’ll get a manual. For me a manual just wouldn’t work for this car. I’ve thought about it, I really have, but I just do see it. Nothing wrong with a well built automatic.

I was hoping that a ‘corporate’ sponsor might step in. I feel weird about taking money from fans of the show. I don’t have any issues with mentioning a brand during a video if they’re willing to send me go fast parts for the car. If it gets to a point where I really need money I’ll think about it, but for now I’m just happy to drive the car. I really enjoy it.

Thanks for your input.
I too have been looking for one of these.

Start with the big pieces first.
Engine: Ford Motorsports Z460 M-6007-Z460FFT
Trans: 6X SIX SPEED TRANSMISSION PACKAGE; SMALL BLOCK FORD BELLHOUSING & PADDLE SHIFTER
Rear End: 2004 Cobra IRS ; these pop up on ebay from time to time
I would choose Kenny Brown for my chassis strengthening; Subframe connectors, Jacking rails, Matrix brace, Strut tower brace and lower k-member brace.
Front suspension could consist of Stock LCA, 04 ball joint, 94-95 spindles, Baer 14 brake kit
and maybe tri-bar factory wheels
Thanks for the input but I have a different idea for how I want it to go. That does sound cool though.

I wanna say that I was initially set back by your choice of a vehicle but you managed to sell it to me so well by the end of the video! I registered just to say that. I doubt I would frequent this forum because I frequent my car specific forums but hands down I am anticipating your build videos !

Btw, STUNNING job on the camera work and the camera placement. Multiple angles, multiple cameras (it appears) and all finely edited together !

Last words: You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar ! Keep it up !

HaHa…I like it Eric. I had a 1981 Fairmont wagon. It was the most reliable car I ever owned. It also was a 200 cu in. inline six. I had that car for 12 years but it was 3 years old when I bought it. When I finally scrapped it, it still had the original engine, trans, rad, starter, and alternator at 325000Km. My kids grew up while I had that car. We went everywhere in it. I called it “the turnip”

The paint color is called Antique Cream.

Yours truly hand washing it.

Nice but I would rather see the current engine and transmission be built up instead of being replaced.

I think I had the same reaction as many others when I first saw the car…wasn’t sure what to think. However, once you explained your plans, I think it sounds like a really cool project. I’m looking forward to the old-school mechanical videos, as well as the performance ones. I think this will be a lot of fun. I will say too that the car looks to be in great shape, and I kind of dig older Fords to be honest. And I get to learn all kinds of new stuff. GoPro footage is awesome too!

It’s also pretty cool to look at this and really see how far ETCG has come, with you now being able to do project cars like this. I love this format, kind of a Wheeler Dealers sort of thing, which is one of my favorite shows.

Finally Eric, you definitely just looked at home in that car. Same kind of look as you driving the Galaxie, so I’m really happy for you! Can’t wait to see this car at the meetup this summer!

I can see where you are going with this โ€“ lots of video possibilities as you change, modify and update your vintage purchase.

Back in college I drove a ’70 Maverick and when it got long in the tooth I returned to Ford for a replacement. They put me in a Fairmont which I drove home to show my spouse. It seemed to me a suitable replacement for the Maverick. I’d say the color was Velveeta orange. Anyway, I had to laugh when you first pulled in because my wife, after taking one look, proclaimed, โ€œThat is the ugliest car I have ever seen!โ€ No, hard feelings, I think your Fairmont is cute but needless to say, we never owned one.

So, yeah, a great sleeper project.
