This is a good one… Very sharp… must be recharged from vacation!
I like the part where you actually said “general practitioner” comparing Indy shops techs as those… Similar to to a doctor… So true… They see EVERYTHING…
Techs can be like Doctors:
Techs can have Egos like doctors
Techs can tend not to listen to customers (as they explain their problems).. Like doctors (I will perform tests and let you know what is wrong)…
They can spend thousands on education (maybe not as much as doctors, but commensurate to future pay), probably close… They can incur debt for their education…
Unfortunately, the general public does not view Techs the same way as other professions…
Cars are more complex than ever, requiring more specialized education, tools and so forth… but are not treated with the respect they deserve (the good ones)… I have had neighbors tell me… that it is easy to work on cars now… There are all these codes that just tell you what the problem is…. I just grind my teeth and politely explain EGR codes, EVAP Codes and Lean or rich codes as merely clues….
IMHO the Gasoline, passenger vehicle tech is treated as a disposable commodity… I have known so many 1-3 year techs who get out of the business and make more money stocking shelves at COSTCO (not that there is anything wrong with that)…
Sorry to get off tangent… Good to see ya back…
