Has anyone ever seen or heard of an erratic speedometer (jumping in park) being related to a faulty alternator on a ’95 Accord?
I know the obvious is a bad meter, vss power supply, vss sensor or ecm issue but I wasn’t sure if a faulty alternator had a known relation to this on the mid 90’s year model Accord’s.

Could disconnect the B+ line at battery to verify for a bit(alternators require an initial charge to generate the field to produce power). When there’s a bad regulator for the S197s, and F150s with the same 4.6L, it will trigger the CMP to give a CEL due to the field generated with its close proximity. Few TSBs on it, although I wouldn’t envision it creating this issue with a VSS unless its really close by or the ground sucked for it on that accord.
Yes, Ive seen that myself and I believe your referring to the “exciter”. I failed to mention this Accord issue is intermittent with no cel.
Aye, just yanking the connector out of the back of the alternator will kill it to test. Of course that’ll bring up a MIL or 2..
Yep, I was trying to see if there was a known relation between a faulty voltage regulator and the speedometer on these particular model Accord’s.
I believe it’s just going to be like many other vehicles that I’ve seen with similar issues. If a sensor or sensors is getting low voltage then it’s going to send a incorrect signal to the ECM and in turn act abnormal so I don’t think it’s a particular known problem with the Honda. It’s common and may not be the VSS or speedometer, just low voltage.
I won’t doubt your diagnosis of the voltage regulator but what you see in the video is typical of a speed sensor failure on Hondas. They may not all be connection issues like that one was but the symptom is the same. I don’t often see issues with Honda voltage regulators, besides there is a separate voltage regulator in the gauge cluster to prevent such fluctuations you speak of.
