Engine won’t rev if wheels spin

I thought I’d have a bit of fun in the somewhat rare snow in my part of the UK. On a slight hill I floored the pedal to get a good skid and the engine just would not rev. Is there some technology in my 2011 VW Passat diesel that causes this – maybe as a safety measure?

Probably traction control & vehicle stability program. Should be a switch to turn it off.
