      Hi all,

Have been following Eric on YT for a long time, looks like it’s time I joined the forum!

I’ve got a 2003 Land Rover Freelander Mk 1 TD4 (Diesel). Drove the car for a couple of months after buying it following a full service and had no issues dashboard light related whatsoever. The one issue it does have is a lumpy idle from cold start which I think may be injector related. This however never gave these symptoms before.

Very recently I have fitted a stainless steel EGR bypass to the car. I read widely online that it’s a good cheap mod which may improve performance and lower mpg and crucially stop dirty gases going back into the inlet. Car is driving great, turbo kicks in at the right time, all is well. But just yesterday I noticed the amber engine warning light. It stayed on for 15/20 minutes then went out.

I obviously need to get the fault code read but my question is, could this be related to a sensor picking up increased emissions now that I have removed the EGR? Other forums have said this model did not have such a sensor and the blanking kit shouldnt affect it, but if the car has the capability of flagging emissions issues (which I believe it does) then shouldnt it possibly notice the change in airflow due to my mod?

eeh… i have some experience with modifying cars and yes bypassing the EGR can throw codes on your PCM, its a common modification among the 3800 performance enthisiest, which also includes free flowing cats with a 3 inch exhaust which the system can also be picky about the cat… but there are PCMs you can get re programmed that will ignore the EGR and even a cat delete, but these modifications are meant for track use only and are illegal in most cases. however this doesn’t stop most of the guys from doing it anyway.

now your lumpy idle however…. not sure that might be caused by the EGR buypass, but before we say it is, get the codes read and lets see what you have.

It could be something like a intake manifold vacuum leak since these will sometimes cause rough idle when cold. After the engine warms up and everything expands the leak mostly seals off and the symptom goes away.

I’m trying to find someone who can do a diagnostic for less than extortionate rates. I was going to buy a generic code reader but apparently this model of older Freelander will only communicate with the more expensive fault readers.

When I fit the EGR one of the hoses wasnt fully tight due to a bad jubillee clip, Ive since replaced that and there doesnt appear to be any other leaks. There does however appear to be diesel collecting in the area around the injectors. So I think its very possible that theres a leak here and pressure is being lost on startup. That did not flag up an engine warning light previously though, Ive only seen that since fitting the EGR.
