Engine Swap

I’m putting an engine in my truck due to it’s blown head gasket. The advanced mileage (265,000 as of now) makes it a better long term solution to swap the engine out for another, less used engine. This will not cost much more than a head gasket replacement, anyway.

So the problem comes here: Must the engine be from another Ram? Does it even have to be of the same displacement? The Ram was available with both 5.2 and 5.9 V8s. Both of these engines were also available in Durangos, Dakotas, and Grand Cherokees… so do I need an identical engine from the same model? I’m only asking because I’m having trouble finding intact, low-mile 5.2s from Rams.

i know with nissan’s VQ motors, as long as the VQ motor was from a FWD nissan, within the same generation, it could be swapped around. the nissan quest, altima, and the maxima all have the same motors, but with slightly different HP/TQ numbers.

with the displacement, i would imagine you would need the 5.2L since the 5.9L is considerably larger and might run into clearance issue. i know eric did an engine swap of a Ram or a Dakota. can’t remember.

Eric did a swap on a 3rd Gen Ram, and I believe it had the 4.7L. My truck is a 2nd gen.

As I understand it, the 5.9 has the same external dimensions. It’s just bored and stroked. I’ve found that I need a different torque converter for the 5.9, because the stall speeds are different due to the higher power of the engine so that’s off the table. What IS on the table is whether or not I can use a Dakota/Durango/Jeep 5.2L. I know the engines are physically the same, but electronically they may not be…

I’d really love to just ditch gasoline and swap in a 4BT or even something smaller. But that just costs too much, and I’m not sure how to get all of the computerized things such as gauges to run properly.

You would have to check the wiring harness connections
to see if the the new computer can be swapped with the
            old harness.
