I hate to go down this road again but here we go.
Iv got a 1993 ford f150 with the 5.0 and the e40d trans.
A few mouths ago i posted a few times about rebuilding my engine.
I was gona buy a block and go from there. but the cheapest block i could find was 100 or 150 with no guaranties.

Alright man, here we go again. If you are on a budget, I would just find a similar model year with the same speed-density controlled EFI as yours, because swapping out the ‘brains’ and ‘wires’ is alot more work than just swapping in a long block. If you can find one for $150 that is relatively low mileage, just swap it in. I would makes sure you hear the engine run before you take it, and get a warranty. If the engine is running in a salvage yard vehicle (which is rare around the scrap yards I deal with, they usually pull the engines first), you can perform say a compression test on it, and see if it’s up to par. If you are just buying an engine to rebuild it, then I would just start with a block and heads, because if you tear apart a higher mileage engine, you are going to run into just as many problems as you would with starting from a block.. If you find a lower mileage engine that is confirmed as running well for $150 that will bolt right in to your current rig, then you could pull the old engine, and rebuild that one, and eventually move on to getting the ECM/wiring harness and converting to the MAF setup, as time and money allows.
I wish I had my ’91 F150 to go look at right now, but it’s been loaned out to one of my brothers. I’m curious to see what EFI controls it uses.
February 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #444697Look for something you can just drop in and not have to mess with any wiring and so forth.
*Edited for misinformation*

95 was the last year Ford used the 302. So using a 95 and up motor would be pointless.

Incorrect. 2001 Ford Explorer.

Yes you are right.
For some reason, i was thinking of the Mustangs and alot of the talk between me and the OP has been about Mustangs in general.
Either way, its going to be a hassle unless he wants to convert from speed density to MAF.
February 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #444700It’s wierd that the Exploder was the only vehicle I’ve found that still offered the 5.0. You must’ve really done yer research to post an ‘I told ya so’.

Haha, I know right.. 😛
February 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #444702Incorrect all the 5.0 is steal made to this day,
I think the fact that everyone is missing is a 5.0 is a 302 – 5.0 is the litter size but steal a 302. Infarct iv got a 2011 ford mustang gt premium with a 5.0 DOHC setting in the drive way. Im thinking about buying it from my boss.
Ford revived the Boss 302 nameplate for 2012. The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 takes a standard 2011 Ford Mustang GTFebruary 29, 2012 at 11:00 am #444703It’s true, the 5.0 is the 302, same displacement different name. However I really can’t give an opinion on your specific question as I just don’t know the answer. I will however say that I agree with the group that if you use the same thing you’ll have the least amount of problems in the end so it’s really up to you where you want to go with this. Keep us posted though so we can all learn from your experience.

Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers. The windsor was still made available for a while in the form of marine engines I think.
I didn’t do any research – I don’t know much but I know the small block Ford 😉

March 4, 2012 at 11:00 am #444709NO beefy you did not suggest that. I thought it would be something good to do to get a little more power out of it.
One bad thing about these 5.0 is the rearmains leak.
Everyone iv had has ran great but the rearmain leaks bad.A few weaks ago i did a oil change and put in valvoline maxlife 20/50 (It brought the oil psi way up), Yall said it was to thick and I should add a few qurts of 10/40.
Well since then iv add about 6 or so 10/40s and the oil psi has stayed the same almost. Good sign????
I dont think the engines gonna fall out anytime soon but if it does im screed. That way i wanna get one pre built.
Iv done extra things hoping to add more life to the engines,
Hi flow water pump.
150Dgr thermostat
duals with flows.
K$N cold air intakes filters.Im thinking about trying to just replace the oil pump.Maybe its just weak??? this a good idea?
March 5, 2012 at 11:00 am #444710No, the oil pump does not create oil pressure. My own ’91 F150, I run 10/40 in it to keep the pressure up, but I’m just putting off the inevitable that I will have to replace the engine. Eric’s vid on how oil pressure works:
