So I have a Daihatsu Charade with an aisan turbo carburettor. It will idle for a bit and then die – when driving it does the same thing, in first and second gear it likes to do weird things with the revs and the car starts to bunny hop.

I’ve done an electronic distributor conversion and swapped the vacuum diaphragm over (to retard timing for boost I believe?) so I don’t think it’s an issue there.

The carburettor did sit for a long time so I’m leaning towards that it has seals and gaskets that are now faulty and need to be replaced due to the old fuel turning into varnish. (perhaps fuel pump?)

Timing is difficult as the engine stalls before I can set it properly – Although in the 30 seconds before it does stall the timing light flashes intermittently not constantly like it should.

I’ve plumbed up the carburettor vacuum hoses as per factory specifications and I’ve cleaned the carburettor with carby cleaner – while running as well.

I’ve played with the mixture screw and that doesn’t really change much.

Engine has just been rebuilt and is not leaking any oils/fluids.

      Thanks!

Can you post a pic of that Aisan carburetor?

I’ve pulled the carby apart and it was absolutely filthy (I used detergent not carby dip and the colour of the liquid went black instantly). Unfortunately auto part store gave me the wrong kit so I need to go back tomorrow and get a replacement.

I’ll get pictures when I’m done with the rebuild.
