Engine Shutdown

      Hey Fellow Chevy owners,
I have a 1988 Chevy Cheyenne 4X4 350 engine, 700R4 Transmission, I also had the stock gears in the rear end changed out to 4:56 gears. Ok the truck seems to be shutting down when I make turns to the right into my subdivision. It does crank back up, but why does this happen? I still have the original fuel pump (knock on wood) Any help if this has happened to you would be appreciated. Also is anyone else having a hard time making the videos play??? I only ask this because I am also having a hard shifting issue as well in 1st gear. It doesn’t matter if I have it in overdrive or just drive.

is that a carburated engine or throttle body injection? you might have a bad idle air control system. (if that engine has something of the sort). the hard turning causes the power steering pump to work harder putting more load on the engine. the idle air control is there to rev up the engine just a little bit to prevent it from bogging and dying by pushing a small amount of air into the intake kind of like a very small supercharger. if the idle air control is bad, the power steering pump would bog the engine down to the point of killing it.

I have a Throttle Body Injection. Today also after watching quite a few videos It was finally diagnosed that my kickdown cable was not properly adjusted. Now 1st gear goes in much smoother.I will check and see about that idle air controller. I know that I have one of those since I have been all over that motor. But I hope that because I decided to run headers I had not messed with the normal operating parameters.

Does it only happen when turning right?

putting headers on wouldnt mess with the engine enough to kill it. it just reduces the back pressure in the engine a little bit. like i said not enough to make that big of a difference.

No not really. This has not happened in quite sometime. At times it would do it left or right turns. I am always making sure every now and then to use a fuel injector cleaner. I had also replaced the ECM last year.

Well I thought that I had the trans figured out, but still bumps in 1st gear.

Just curious, did you change the gears in both the front and rear differentials?

No I only changed them in the rear. I don’t do that much 4 wheeling to worry about the front diff yet.

Have you heard of any header that may have shifted???? I was able to take a regular ratchet and socket to remove the front plug and now I can’t remove the plug on the drivers side of the motor!!!!

With a 4WD you MUST have the same gear ratio on the front and the rear differentials. If not you’ll put the whole thing into a bind.

Not sure what you mean by ‘header that may have shifted’.
