      Hi all.
ive got this car with 114k kms on it and it now has nearly 180k kms.
its always serviced and have been using 5 30 fs but recently changed to 10 40 synthetic.
car runs perfect no bogging etc.
but the rattle is driving me nuts.
its only heard when you rev the car up and happens just before the peak of the rev on idle.
its deffinatly under the rocercover because when i remove the oil filler cap the sounds gets muffled, but it could be just getting drowned out by blow by.

when driving the car its most noticable in 1st and 2nd.
if i drive in 1st at a stedy 2000rpm and lightly touch the throttle it rattles.
if i drive in 2nd its the same.
when driving it seems to rattle just before the gear change.
more noticable at cold startup, and also the cold start up is a bit more rough than normal.
when car gets to operating temp its not as bad but can still be heard especially in alleyways where the sound echoes.

ive never done a valve adjustment on it as i find it hard to get time.

hope sombody can point me in the right direction.
      thanks

      edit
i have to change the file format.
hopfully i will be able too

Did you check your heat shields? I had an Accord and a Civic that constantly rattled because the heat shields were loose. They rattled intermittently. Also check your engine mounts.

switch back to 5w-30 conventional oil and see if the
issue changes. 10w-40 is to thick.

I think using the 10 40 has quietened the engine a bit.

Ive adjusted the ignitiion timing to 12 btdc and seems to have helped a bit but iys still there.
                It was at 15.
Il record another clip on a different phone, hopfully it will work.

Your valves could be out of adjustment, your timing belt could be loose, your distributor could be making noise. Its hard to say without hearing it. Try uploading to youtube and creating a link. Thicker engine oil will typically quiet down engine mechanical noises.

                    Here’s the sound clip.
It’s seems to be most noticeable on the timing side generally.

After that video I went to the shop and it was better after that but still there.

That does indeed sound pretty terrible. It sounds like a valve train issue to me. Pull the valve cover and inspect valve clearance and see if you see anything out of place.

BTW the link didnt work, had to search you out on youtube :cheer:

One is like a break in the casting
                            Which wasent deburred im guesing.
Slso look at the low cam rhs it seems discoloured.

Im waiting for the engine to cool at the moment before I check the lash

The casting is nothing that I would worry about. Do any of the other cam lobes share the the shiny look? Does the lobe look flatter than any of the rest?

Now that you have the valve cover off, does the timing belt look loose at all?

I didnt realize that bad boy as a DOHC!! If it is anything like the B series motors in the integras then they distributors will rattle and make noise like no other if the timing belt is loose.

Yes its a bad boy at the moment ha!
I replaced the belt and tensioner when I got the car first with honda parts and the belt has a little slack between tje cams but I think its ok.
Does that sound like the distributer to you?

I checked the valve lash which should be intake .006 .007
                                  Exhaust .007 .008

On the intake neither would fit and on exhaust both would fit so im a little lost as to wheter adjust thm to spec, but im not sure if the specs I hve are correct.
I got them on the net where people say use the same as h22.

I cant say if those are the exact specs to be perfectly honest. The rattle did sound upper end to me. Is there a label on the underside of the hood w/ the specs? If they are close then that most likely isnt the cause. You may want to put her back together and try to pinpoint with a stethescope exactly where on the head/engine its coming from.
