Hi Eric , i am highly frustrated with engine overheatinf issue on my FIAT palio 1.2 ELX. I am living in India, bangalore. The first time i took it to mechanical shop, there was hose pipes leakage. Once fixed, the same day there was coolant leakage with the water pump side. The same guy replaced the water pump and timing kit, dummy and some fresh replacements of the hose pipe. Again i saw leakage of coolant after getting the delivery of the car. This time i took it to FIAT authorized service centre and replaced the dummy and tightened the hose pipes. On the same day when i got the delivery the hose pipe from engine to radiator just had a huge crack. Again fiat serviced it stating there was a faulty thermostat and when i got delivered i could again see coolant leakage near the bottom of the engine. I have again given it to service with no more hope. I read numerous reviews and videos and the funny thing is these guys don’t have a device to check headgasket leakage for detecting carbon dioxide in coolant chamber. They say they would do compression test to determine headgasket leakage. I am frustrated. Can you help me how to diagnose and find the root cause of this multiple failure ? Thanks.

If your system is leaking coolant then it won’t hold pressure
it will overheat. The leaks must be fixed. Pressure test the
cooling system. This link will help you further.

Leakage is one thing but what is so often overlooked is air in the system. Anytime you open a cooling system for repair like that the air must be purged from it in order for it to function properly. More info on that, as well as videos on testing cooling systems, at the link College man posted for you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

My old car leaked coolant through the head gasket and I never had overheating issues. Anyways op I would make sure they’re in fact bleeding the air out, it can be a pain in the butt on some cars. Is your oil milk shake colored? Is there white steam coming out of tail pipe after the car has been running for a while? Better yet smell the steam!

Thanks Eric. I had read and viewed several videos and articles related to overheating on your site that you had posted. One thing that cought up me from your article was, yes there was water dripping where i push the clutch pedal and there was water on the front side passenger seat with fog on the windshield. If you could shed some light here it would be good as the HVAC section was running deep into AC issues than an engine overheating trouble. I had fixed leakage issues 4 times and spend about 300 dollars and the issue just kept coming. Although these guys don’t have a diagnostic tool for CO2emission detection, yesterday they called me and said that coolant was boiling and pressure building up after fixing all leaks, air blocks, water dummy and water jacket replacement, water pump replacement, radiator overhaul, hose replacements. Now they said headgasket as the last thing and opened it to find that it was completely damaged headgasket which was not of OEM. My question to them was why did they keep fixing leaks without fixing leaks without fixing the root cause! I told them to warranty for further repairs if headgasket replacement does not fix the problem as the causes could be still more as you said in the article like something that overloads engine to dissipate more heat than usual. I am hoping this fixes the issue but it is pretty wierd that none of the authorized guys here have a block tester. Thanks a lot.

No white smoke, no chocolate oil, but yes a strange exhaust smell. Now they have found headgasket as the cause and are replacing it. Yes a damn pain in the butt. I hate technicians who fix issues without fixing the root causes which made me she’ll out most 300+ dollars with no use ! Headgasket replacement charges are yet to be billed. Anyways, a first hand learning on maintaining cars. Thanks college man !

Do make certain that when they pull that cylinder head off, they have it checked by a machine shop to be certain there are no cracks, AND to make certain that it has not warped from the overheating.

If it has warped, and they don’t have it properly checked, and fixed by a machine shop, you will have the new head gasket failing pretty shortly, and be right back at step one.

Hi eric. I really appreciate that you take some time out to reply to a person so far away in this world. Thanks a lot. As you said yes, that’s what they are exactly doing. They would take the head gasket to probably some lathe machine shop to check for warps and any cracks. I have personally inspected the headgasket. One of those Cylinder had some coolant or oil in it. He said that was coolant. I would take care as you suggested. I will keep you posted so that if something new occurs it would a am added knowledge for all. Hoping for best. Thanks Eric. !
