I have a 1998 manual transmission 1.3L Chevrolet Metro LSi with 60,000 miles that has developed an engine noise. A few days ago, while driving home from work, the engine started making a squealing noise, that got louder as time went on. I figured it was the AC; however, it wasn’t on. So I turned it on to see if it would get worse and was surprised to hear that the engine noise disappeared. When I turned the AC off again, the engine noise reappeared. After sitting in the street for a few days, I started it today and was surprised there was no engine noise. So I decided to drive it around to see if it would reappear and after 10 minutes it did — and once again, it disappeared when I turned on the AC and reappeared when I turned off the AC.

A visual / mechanical inspection of the belt(s) and tensioner(s) would be a good start.

If these are the original belts on a 20 year-old car, (or if you’ve owned the car more 5 years and haven’t changed them), they’re overdue for replacement anyway.

If the rest of the engine bay is as neglected, it’d be a good idea to change the coolant hoses, clamps, thermostat, rad cap and coolant too.
