My car is a Nissan Cefiro A32 also known as nissan maxima. All the engine mounts is o.k but it still gives a big thud when i shift gear from P to D or R. And it does it when it changes gear while running. The rear engine mount ended up broken.

Engine mounts can look perfectly fine but still be internally broken. Try this: get a friend to sit in the car while you watch the engine. Have your friend put their foot on the brake, firmly, while they move the lever from part to reverse to drive. You will most likely see the engine tilt and thunk a bit. A little tilting, like half an inch, is normal, anything more than that and some engine mount is broken. And of core if you can hear and locate the “thunk” noise location, the problem is likely there.

Your idle may be too high. If the idle is too high when changing gears it can do that. Still a good idea to check the mounts. Also, it could be a problem with the transmission. If you have any check engine light codes, start with those. They will be your best clues as to what is happening.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Eric. I think the idle is way too high. Because if i put the gear to D from P and let it roll, it picks up speed and changes to second gear without me pressing on the gas pedal. I wanted to take it to a garage to check it, but their charge is way too expensive.

                Thanks
