Hi, I have a 1994 Saturn SL2 130,XXX miles. I noticed a bit of hesitation when accelerating fast from a dead stop. I immediately pulled over and checked it out. I noticed that there is a clunk noise coming from the engine when revved up. It isn’t consistent, just a single clunk right when I hit the gas. It sounds like it’s coming from the valve cover. I checked oil and it’s good. I am going on an 160 mile trip this weekend, and need this car to run good.

Does it do this when your vehicle is in park as well? Check your engine and transaxle mounts/bushings… Could have a broken or worn one causing the engine to move slightly under acceleration… Have someone rev the engine and look for excessive movement in, under and around the engine and trans…

Bad motor mounts are fairly common on these cars. Have someone put it in drive and back into park while you watch the motor and see if you notice any excessive movement.

Yes, it makes the noise in park. I’ll do that and let you know how it goes. It has a bit of hesitation to go along with it. Would that also lead to motor mounts, or something else?
