engine knock

Hi again, not sure if this is the appropriate forum section, but What exactly is engine knock and what does it mean? To me the bearing that connects the crank shaft to the connecting rod has come loose, but I am not sure. I have a cel for both the coolant temp sensor and engine knock sensor and I was just wondering what engine knock is.

simply stated its a knock, sounds like someone knocking on a steal door, but fast (accompanies engine speed). now there is upper engine knocks too but they sound more like a tapping (like tapping on a desk) hope this helps.
