      Hello all,

Most small leak emissions codes require a smoke test to assist in finding leaks…

Has anyone ever made one from a fog machine? I saw a video on it, Seemed quite interesting…

What tricks do any of you use to assist diagnosing that pesky p0442 code?

      Thanks a bunch
      Mike

Normally is to replace the valve cover an spark gasket kit to reduce the amount of oil in the cylinder. For the fog test I have no idea.

i agree small leaks can be hard to diagnose. sometimes any evap leak can be hard. i never heard of anyone making there own smoke machine. i don’t see why a fog machine wouldn’t work if you could get the smoke into the system. maybe if you took one of the evap lines off and used a hose clamp to seal it might work. Small leaks can be very hard to see some times, and i have had some that simply don’t show up with a smoke test. what kind of vehicle are you working on? in my experiences an evap leak code is usually a gas cap, vent valve or filler neck.

I was doing some searching on this last night also because I have what I believe is a vacuum leak. The videos I saw the fog machine has a 1/8″ pipe fitting on the end of it so the guys just used a short pipe nipple to come out of the machine and then some rubber hose. Some added a tee fitting and a small amount of compressed air, under 20 PSI to help the fog flow better. I’ve been meaning to build one for a while now and just never did and see the cheap fog machines have gone up about 10 bucks in price.

Here’s a good thread on making one and some videos, http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91216&highlight=smoke+machine.
