Can anyone please help me. I have a 2003 BMW X5 E53, the Sat nav module is waking from hibernation far too frequently when the vehicle is switched off, I have had the M IV DVD nav unit completely overhauled with new processors and drive but it is still coming on with 6.8 milliamp drain for around five minutes whilst it locates the satellites at intervals between every 15 to 45 minutes.

I have identified the fuse in order to isolate the unit but it means having to keep removing and replacing the fuse when not using the vehicle for a few days. My question is; part I can purchase or is it possible to rig a switch running from the fuse and (except my ignorance, not great when it comes to electricity) is it actually possible to make a switchable circuit that cuts the fuse? Or would I have to trace the wires from the fuse box to splice in a switch, would prefer not to as in the X5 it is not going to be easy to do from the wires entering the fuse box.

I have seen items such as http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222006665487?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTOLEADS-BSF10A-10-AMP-STANDARD-SPUR-BLADE-FUSE-LEAD-CABLE-FOR-CAR-VAN-VEHICLE-/150904699664?hash=item23229efb10:m:mkaoREvsfeniYiQ2RhPRgDA

But I am not sure if it is possible to do what I want to and if so how I would actually do it. I do know hoe to wire a switch but not if it is possible from a fuse.

You can wire a switch in after the fuse to cut power to the component. How hard or not hard to get to the wire is another story. you would basically need to find which wire comes out of the fuse box and powers up the sat nav and wire a switch into this wire.

Cleaning contacts might make the world of difference. Cheap solution, doesn’t take up too much time. Here’s a good thread to get things back to normal.

Let us know if that works.

I would be more concerned as to what is causing the module to wake up..
It is being triggered by something…
A wiring diagram for your specific make, model and options will be your best friend.
You’ll need to find where and what is powering the circuit and what commands it.
            Possibly the BCM….

The contacts have been cleaned, I tried that on the advice of the company that I later sent it to, to be refurbished. Unfortunately it made no difference

According to two BMW dealers, the vehicle was fitted with an early BWM tracking security system, when the system was removed it has caused the issue and to rectify it I would need to replace the entire vehicle management system, as it not possible to reset/reprogram it. The cost of doing so is pointless for a 13 year old car.

Can you suggest how the circuit would have to run?

I was hoing I could go from the actual fuse, using a fuse tap. so wire from unit in to fuse box, fuse box to std blade fuse, then fuse taps to switch. But I want to be sure before doing so that is will work and I do not end up killing the fuse box.
