      Hello,

If i clean my EGR valve and EGR passages. may i see any gain in MPG or performance?

I drive a 2000 mitsubishi eclipse v6…. the EGR passages and valve are in a very hard to reach position. I’ve owned this car for 5 years and i never cleaned anything related to the EGR system. Is it worth it?

      Thanks

If you clean the EGR valve, yes it will run smoother. “is it worth it?” Iv never done this job on this car so I cant say. I just cleaning my EGR valve because the smog is coming up soon. but would i like to do it again…no not really. lol

Agree with college man. No problems means leave it alone. Passages can be cleaned. But I’d just replace the valve, not try to clean it.

It’s not likely you’ll notice any increase in performance. EGR is designed to reduce NOx emissions under engine load. It does this by adding a but of exhaust gas to the combustion chamber to help cool it down under periods of high load conditions. You might notice 2 things if the EGR was not working properly. The first is pinging, the second is possibly an engine miss under load. The ladder would only be if SOME of the EGR passages were clogged and others were clear. If all passages were clogged then you might not notice anything at all. Mostly people only notice a check engine light if they have an EGR fault. I hope that answers your questions.
