So my IH 4900 was acting like it had no power towards the end of my route. It had very slow acceleration and it would die quickly when going up hills. it seemed to struggle heavily on hills actually. The clutch is fine, just got adjusted about a month ago, no smoke, just low power. Air filter is clean. Oil pressure is good. Temp was fine. No lights came on. The turbo isn’t really as noticeable in sound, but I can still hear it. Me and my dad both came to agree that it seems like the turbo is going, but it has no smoke, isn’t burning oil. I know one of our previous work trucks did this same thing towards the end of the day, last year and the next day, it drove like a champ all day and then once I got on the highway, the bottom end just blew out. Oil spewed everywhere on I-95 but it still ran. It was like a sudden death either it just kept losing more and more power over like 5 football fields until it blew. But yeah, would love to get through tomorrow at least with this truck.

usually you can hear a turbo spool up. Check that all your turbo hoses are connected
and not broken. this will cause a loss of boost.

They’re all good. Turbo just isn’t noticeable really like it used to be. Truck is just starting to run slow anymore. For the past 2 months, I’ve noticed a quite a loss in power on acceleration and now, the truck doesn’t seem to want to get up to 60 mph on the highway. It seemed to do fine on the hills today. Engine’s probably just getting worn out. It’s got 480,000 miles and I don’t remember how long or even if it has gotten an overhaul. Exhaust doesn’t smell rich or potent, engine sounds fine. I’m hopeful it’s just the turbo slowing down due to wear.

Just as an update*** This truck has been in the shop at my workplace for about a month, for a couple weeks prior to it being parked, every Monday after it sitting for a weekend, I would start the truck and oil would spew out from the breather tube. I would inform the mechanics and they would just fill her back up a couple quarts and I wouldn’t have a problem until the next Monday. Then one Monday, pretty much all the oil spewed out and the mechanics told me that was the last day for awhile. The truck had no power for the previous 2-3 months. Mechanics did pull the engine and they just finished up putting the new one in. The mechanics never had an explanation for the engine spewing out that oil. Now I’m in a brand new Freightliner M2 with the CAT 210 C7. The way it looks though, I won’t be keeping it long because I might be getting this truck once they’re done with it.

EDIT: Figures once I got the front end fixed on this truck just a couple weeks prior too. The right tie rod snapped on me while I was driving down I-95. It drove as smooth as a caddy after they fixed it. Now it needs a new engine… Just my luck I guess
