      So my father bought a new car today (to him) when i tried to back off the adjuster the whole drum would lock up, i’m going the right way (opposite of adjusting it) im just baffled as a new tech i don’t have all of the tricks to the trade any idears?

        Make sure the parking brake is not engaged. try turning the adjuster the other direction-see what happens. are you doing a brake job or just inspecting them ? if doing a brake job and all else fails , cut the heads off of the shoe retaining nails ( back side of the mounting plate ) this will let the shoes move away from the drum and the drum will come off. then get a spring kit and replace them ( with the new springs of course )

          it will free the drum back up, and just checking it and on cobalts it has the big u shaped spring, theres no retainers on it.

            If the drum is locking up the more the adjuster is turned
            Try going the other way.I wonder if someone was in the and
            put the adjuster in backwards.
