Let say I want to change my drive axle, I saw some video when pry out the drive axle from transmission there is some oil coming out from the transmission. What oil is that? transmission oil for auto and gear oil for manual? if the transmission fluid is sealed for life then how to top up the fluid when replace drive axle? I saw Eric video but he doesn’t top up any fluid nor any fluid coming out from the transmission.

That oil is the transmission fluid if an auto and gear oil if it is a manual. There should be plugs for adding fluid to the transmission (whichever type). They just may not be the easiest to get to.

It kinda helps if we know some details about the car/truck you are working with.

As Karl states. There will be a fill plug or some such setup. I would recommend picking up a Haynes or Chiltons guide to research the drain and refill procedure for your exact make/model.

Please keep in mind that car/truck makers can be very picky about what fluid is used. (eg: VW requires it’s own special brand of auto transmission fluid, or it’s approved spec. Manual fluid? HAS to be exactly what VW states, as the wrong fluid can do more harm then good.)

Please keep us posted on your progress.

There’s one automatic in common use that contains both automatic transmission fluid and gear oil. In certain of the newer automatic transmissions the only place for adding transmission fluid is through the opening of a removed speed sensor. Some automatics look like they have a removalble plug for adding fluid but it is actually a band anchor. Remove the anchor and have to disassemble the transmission to put the band back in place. So, know what you are doing before removing something to add fluid. Removing the band anchor is a common shop mistake.

Not ever car drips oil out when you pull out the drive shafts. But be prepared to add some. You alre pulling the drive shafts out of the side of the differential which in most cars is built into the transmission and shares the same type of lubricant. But some cars are very picky and need special oil for the differential, so check the car manual.

I did point out in that video that you might see fluid come out when you change the axle. This is why I recommended putting a pan under the transaxle when you remove the axle. If you loose fluid during the process, you can always top it off with the correct fluid once you have the new axle installed.
