I recently went to the ol’ junkyard and found a decent transmission for my truck, I put it in and it works fine however I don’t think the torque converter that came with it is in good condition (makes a god awful noise only when slowing down or any kind of slight drop in RPM while in gear) and I know the torque converter from the old one works fine. How would I go about draining the old converter of all its fluids and replacing them? I want to put it back into the truck to save some money since a new one is a little expensive. Any ideas or thoughts on this? Thanks!

      Truck: 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L V8 46RE 4 speed automatic transmission.

You can do it it’s just a PITA. I did a rebuild on my 94 Crown Vic’s AODE trans and re-used the old TC. Took a solid week to drain that thing. If I had to do it over again I’d just buy a new one.

Yeah, i think that’s what I might end up doing since I’m going to go through the trouble of doing the work anyway. It wouldn’t be so bad if I had a lift and a tranny jack but doing it on the ground with only a 2 1/2 jack to support the weight makes it quite a process.

I hear ya on that one man. I used a bunch of 2×4’s and made up a ghetto trans stand that I set on the floor jack. Made life a little easier but still a pain. A nice set of 3 ton jack stands makes life easier as well.

When I replaced my fuel pump I found the perfect pallet about 3 1/2ft X 2ft which I stuck on my small floor jack (the cheap ones you buy from autozone lol) and that cradled the fuel tank nicely so I could drop it. The 2 1/2 ton jack I mentioned I got from my dad, which is my first full sized professional jack and I’m going to use the same pallet (which my old transmission is currently sitting on) to support the tranny when I do replace the torque converter.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Try not to have too much fun in there, lol. :silly:

If I’m working on a car I’m having fun, I don’t care what it is! I don’t consider it work, it’s fun!
