Door experts! Door bounces back when closed?!

The door in my car (well van) wont stay shut, it just bounces back from the striker.

The clasp moves freely from the open to locked position but wont stay in the locked position. Any ideas? I have had the door card off and everything looks ok, it just wont clasp shut around the striker.

The vehicle in question is a vahaull movano which is the same as a renault master. But the latch mechanism looks extremely similar to every other car.

Does everything line up properly? Are the bolts tightened all of the way? Is the seatbelt inside the car?

Yes everything lines up ok, Tried lifting the door slightly incase it was sagging but no difference. The seatbelt is in the car and no obstructing the door from closing everything looks like it should work but the mechanism wont latch over the striker on the body.

With the door open, can you use a screw driver and latch the door?

Id also be checking for rubbing marks of paint on the door pillars near the striker.

The latch may be broken. Try the above test to see if the latch is capable of latching, if not you may have to replace it.
