Man, seems most of the posts with car problems are on Asian cars. Makes me feel a little better (almost) that all the cars I have owned were domestic. With the exception of our 2009 Buick which has had numerous intermittent electrical problems, most were fairly reliable. Had a German car in high school, a Buick Opel, but I don’t think that counts as a car.

I think what you’re seeing is the popularity of Asian cars over domestics.

To be honest, if I was in the market for a car, I’d be looking at Asian products too. To me, it seems like America has forgotten how to build good cars. I’m a life-long MOPAR fan, but there’s no way I’d consider any of their new products, except maybe a RAM truck.

On a related note, I think there’s an untold and interesting story behind Ford and Chrysler deciding to give up on full size vans, and market Euro-sourced units instead. The full sized van is as American as the 1/2 ton pickup, and it seems we can’t even build competitive vehicles in that market anymore.

Not trying to start anything. Just from the media comparing American cars to foreign make you think foreign cars can go half a million miles with just replacing the normal wear parts & never leave you stranded or never have a problem where you replaced everything on the car except for the passenger side sun visor & still have the same problem. All car manufactures have their problems.

I agree with oldskll; and I say that as a long time “foreign car” (mostly Asian) mechanic who spent 40 to 50 hours a week fixing them…….

They break down, have recalls, chronic problems, and countless TSBs just like any other car on the road.
It chapped me to no end to hear someone going on about Hondas (to use one example) being problem free and never having any issues while I’m in the shop 5 to 6 days a week fixing those Hondas.
            And Subaru? I won’t even go there……..

Yep. Worked at a Toyota dealer for awhile when I was in college. They had just started selling Subaru just before I got there. I think the Brat was the only model they had back then. I did light repair work along with dumping the trash, sweeping floors and making lunch runs…This was around1978. All I remember doing a lot of on Toyotas was jet changes and choke adjustments for the winter months then again in spring for drivability issues. We made bets on how long before a just sold Subaru would come back with a problem.

Yes, Subarus came back with a lot of issues no matter how much good press was given to them.

Not widely known, but back in the 80s most Subarus had their air conditioners installed at the ports where the car arrived. They were done by 2 man teams; one guy under the hood and the other inside the car.

They got paid something like 40 bucks a car (20 each) and could knock out an A/C install in 45 minutes. There was a 90 day warranty on this “factory air conditioning”.

You can imagine the problems this caused with install problems and worst of all; the fact that many cars sat on the lot leaking refrigerant for 90 days or with some wiring screwup.
This meant the A/C warranty was up before the car was even sold….
