I have a 2001 Dodge Durango Limited 4.7 hemi with 176,000 miles on it.
In the winter months when the temperature drops well below freezing the gear selector lock will not disengage to allow it to move from park until the vehicle cabin has warmed up.

If I place the Durango in the garage on those cold nights it shifts from park fine. This only happens when it is outside in the cold.

It acts like the brake pedal is not being depressed. I’m assuming there is some switch becoming frozen, but so far I’ve been unable to determine where it might be. The brake lights are coming on when the selector won’t move so I don’t believe that switch is bad or if it even relates to the gear selector.

That post sounds exactly like the issue I’m having.
I’ll be checking it this weekend.

          Thanks

OK. So my year Durango used a mechanical lock which is deactivated with the key is in the on position. There is a lever attached to the ignition that releases the locking pin on the gear selector.
I found a video describing the locking mechanism.

For now I put just a little bit of grease on the sliding bar and moved it back and forth. I really won’t know if this took care of the issue until we get some cold weather…
But at least the video showed how to get it unlock using my finger if it does happen.

              thanks for your help.

                  ***UPDATE*****

The temperatures have been below zero overnight the past couple days.
The Gear Selector is is operating normally when the Durango is started in the morning.

It appears the little bit of grease I sprayed onto the mechanism has done the trick.
