I changed the transmission fluid and filter on my 2001 T&C 3.8L. Never have these transmissions flushed or you will be hating life as Eric would say. Immediately after when downshifting from overdrive (or 4th gear) the van would lurch, think downshifting in to too low of a gear in a manual. Evidently this is common on these vans and can be fixed by taking the vehicle at highway speeds and repeatedly downshifting by pressing the gas pedal all the way and activating the kick down 10-15 times. This allows the computer to relearn the shift patterns with the new fluid and brings it back to normal operation.

I owned a 1999 T&C Limited. I used the Mopar ATF fluid in it the whole time I had the van. those transmissions are very sensitive as to what type of fluid you put in it. The Factory service manual says to use Mopar ATF fluid only. The only problem I had with the transmission was a bump shift. I bought the van brand new and put 260,000 miles on it. I traded it for a car that was good on gas. I hope this helps. Respectfully.

I seriously hope you had ATF+4 put in it and not Dextron/Mercon. If you did you need it flushed again and fast. If this is flushed at the intervals it was supposed to be flushed at it shouldn’t act up at all. But if its been neglected or the wrong fluid in it the thing could fall on its face fast and might go out soon.

If you don’t want to run through all the drive cycles of a Chrysler relearn you can find any shop that has a high-end scanner with bi-directional controls and they can do a relearn inside of 5 minutes. Makes a night and day difference if that is all it needs. However, if there are active codes in the transmission module they must be corrected first and would mean they are the cause of the problem, not the need for a relearn.
