My daughter has a 99 civic ex with 169k miles. I normally change the plugs cap and rotor every 15k miles because she beats the heck out of the car.
I believe the manual says to change every 30k. BTW I use the standard Denso plugs.

In short…yes. Even rough use won’t really produce ‘extra’ wear & tear on the ignition components, I’d just stick to the 30k internval. Although plugs and stuff are pretty cheap too, so no real harm done to your wallet.

Really just up to you and what you prefer, I know I do stuff on my cars that isn’t necessary just because I’m bored sometimes.

          Agreed…
No reason to replace the ignition components that often.

Depends on the condition of the engine. New is always better, most times. But agreed with other. Not really necessary unless she fouls them up quick.

Condition of engine and transmission for its age I would rate as very good.
I do oil changes every 5k and have to add less than a qt between changes.
              Thanks for all your replies.

                Hi Sevillelady,

What do the old plugs look like when you pull them out? You could always check them every 15k and only replace if they appear fouled. But if they have that nice white ashen look, then I’d leave them alone.

Plugs have the white ash look but the gap appears to have widened but I did not measure with the gap tool.

You certainly aren’t hurting anything by changing them out, but I would tend to agree that every 15k miles is more often than necessary. How do the plugs look when you pull them? is the electrode significantly worn? I’d recommend pulling and gapping them at 15k miles, then replace at the recommended 30k. For the cap and rotor, you can take a look at the business end of the rotor and the points in the cap to see if there has been significant erosion. I am guessing since you didn’t mention the wires, that they are part of the cap as an assembly (that’s how they were on an old Toyota Corolla I had years ago) – you want to ohm them out and see if they are in spec – if the rotor/points look good and the wires are in spec, no need to replace that, either.

Thanks for bringing up the spark plug wires. There are NGK’s installed they were put in at around 115K. I actually did a resistance check and they performed like new. NGK wires I can certainly recommend as replacements to OEM.
