do cars come with 4 brake rotors?

I was trying to buy parts for my car. I want to change my rotors and brake pads/shoes. The online parts retailer sells a rear brake pad but I think my car uses a brake shoe since it has a brake drum. Does this mean the rear uses a brake drum or it still uses a brake rotor along with the brake drum? Brake drum and rotor comes in the rear in other words. Let me know if I am on track. I was trying to get 4 rotors, 2 front brake pads and 2 rear brake shoes. Is that all I need? The car is a 2001 Toyota Celica GT.

Without looking up information on your Celica, in general all new cars come with disc brakes on the front. Some have disc and some have drum brakes on the rear. Upgraded editions of certain vehicles will have disc brakes on the rear while the base model comes with drums. Some vehicles with disc brakes on the rear also have a drum brake inside the rotor. This functions as the emergency brake.

if you are unsure of what you have, pull a rear tire off, there you go. Yes, they did come with either or that year. Its entirely possibly you have shoes, but another guy with a 2001 has rotors.

My car’s rear wheels uses brake shoes so does this automatically mean it uses brake drums and not rotors? I called up my mechanic to make sure he said at first all 4 wheels uses rotors but then he called me back saying the rear uses drums. The online auto parts I get my parts from do not sell brake drums for my car, but they sell rotors for front and rear, which is why I am assuming my car uses only rotors. Does the rear uses drums and not rotors considering it uses brake shoes (not pads)?

This is simple. Walk to the rear wheel. If you have alloy wheels on the car with spokes you don’t even have to remove a wheel to see the brakes. Do you see a drum or a rotor?

OP, you have rear rotors with brake pads. Rotor center has drum for parking brake. Parking brake has shoes. Front end is all rotors and pads.

that’s strange. I was told my car year make and model had 2 different variations. I don’t remember having brake pads on the rear. I thought it uses brake shoes. Considering it takes longer to actually replace them (unlike brake pads they wear out faster). Are you still sure my rear uses brake pads? I’ve had my front replaced more often than the rear.

I’ve never used brake pads on the rear. I can’t remember at all.
