      Hi guys!

So I am looking into doing the brakes on my car. Now I am wondering (and a bit concerned) if say I were to do the brakes and a few months from now something happens where the brakes fail and I get into an accident, will the insurance company cover me?

I know it varies from country to country and company to company but from what you have experience how does that usually work. I am from Canada so it is a bit different here than say US or UK but just curious to know before I call the insurance company.

As always thank you very much!

I used to hate people that did their own repairs. I felt it was taking food out of the techs mouth. I often thought about a DIY er doing the repair incorrectly and possibly killing another.

I came to realise that I was never gonna stop DIY work so I decided to help people do the job the right way. That’s one reason I’m here on the ETCG forum.

Based on my dealings with insurance companies in the past I would say unless there’s a fatality they won’t get into who did the brakes. If you have an annual inspection where you live, it’s the responsibility of the inspector to make sure everything is road worthy. As for your ability to do your own brakes, that’s up to your local laws. If they say you can’t do your own brakes and there’s an incident as a result of the faulty work you did, then you would be in trouble. Otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about it. Above all, do the brakes correctly so it’s not a concern. I think that’s the best insurance you can have.

I’ve did brakes on many vehicles in the past [my own and friends] I would think if they trust you with that they will trust you with anything.

              My routine is simple.

If it’s a car I’m not that familiar with I research it,After researching it I usually start from front driver and wrap around, with doing what Eric said in a video I watched last night {use the opposite side as a mirror} meaning that if you’re working on driver front, look at passenger front for the mirrored image.
Lay everything out in front of you as you would be rebuilding it on the ground. And Lastly, take your time and don’t rush. I think after all of that and you do a road/brake test and everything passes, you will be perfectly fine.
