Hi. i have a 1987 dodge b250 with a 318 motor. I am changing out my distributer for a new one. The one on it now has 2 pick ups on it but the book says the stock part only has 1 pickup on it. So if i use the one that auto zone recomended with only one pick up, then id have an empty plug just hanging. So my question is, should i get the distributer that matches what i had all along with 2 or should i go with what they said was stock, only with 1 pick up on it? Will it matter ?

Here is a diagram: Looks like it will work either way. Two provides redundancy. If the rest of the hardware on the distributor is the same perhaps you can move the pickup from the old to new and keep the single as a spare.

If my memory serves me I believe that the engine uses one pickup for starting and the other is for run. If the old one has both connected I would try to find the correct one to avoid possible problems. Why are you replacing it anyway?

I think the easiest thing to do is put in what came out. It might work with the other distributor, but if you don’t have to mess with that then I wouldn’t.

Please keep us updated on how things work out.
