I have a lot of black soot around the gas cap it extends to the outside body and onto the gas door and surrounding areas. I have cleaned it, but it seems to come back. What could be the cause of this?

Do you have a service engine soon light? It sounds like it needs a new fuel cap anyway.

No service engine soon light. It’s on a 1999 civic lx. I guess I can try changing the cap, but I was just wondering if anything else could cause this.

How old is your gas cap, how is the gasket on it-is it cracked, torn, missing?

The gas cap is original to the car. So it’s about 14 years or so. No cracks in the cap and the gasket looks ok, but I don’t have anything to compare it to.

Try a new cap first. If the problem comes back then check
your vent lines and vapor canister for restriction. If plugged
or restricted the pressure will build and be forced out. Then it
                picks up the dirt.
