On vauxal (opel) astra 2.0L intersting problem… On idle engine is overheating but when give some trottle temperature gauge go back and every work fine. On road is ok because engine all time have rpm, but when is on idle for a few minute gauge goes up to red zone. Radiator fan is on but there is no efect until I give some rpm, even 1500-1600rpm is enought.

If you increase your rpm at idle and you see the temperature drop. You have a water-pump problem or a clogged radiator with poor head gasket leak stopper (no liquid epoxy one).

I also suspect on water pump but want to hear some opinion about that. May be radiator but its a low chance… probably turbine on pump spining free on axle and when it gets a higher spin it work.

My first thought is the water pump. But you can be sure whit the belt conditioner to gain traction before changing the water pump. Check in case the radiator if It’s clogged, before or after your water pump installation.

on that engine (and almoust all opel engine) water pump is run by a toth belt so there is no chanse for low traction…

It sounds to me like the rad is partially plugged. At idle, the flow is less than at a higher rpm. Back flush it through the bottom with water and let it come out the top to see if any crap comes out.
You might have to replace the rad.

It’s the water pump or the radiator. If It’s the water pump bearing fail, the belt will glide on the water pump wheel and noise will be heard with coolant leak in general. A clogged radiator will reduce the heat transfer at any rpm. Obviously after thought, you lose coolant flow somewhere if It’s not your water pump.

You can do a coolant flush to clean All. Don’t forget to bleed your air in the coolant circuit (radiator bleed)
