Did I Destroy My Engine?

Long story short, I was trying to accelerate hard in my 1999 Corolla, and I downshifted into 2nd at about 70 mph (didn’t realize how fast I was going). I watched as the tach instantly zipped up to 8k (redline is 6k), thought “oh shit”and kicked in the clutch again, but it was too late. The engine stalled. No bang or anything, just stalled. So, still going about 65 mph, I tried to restart the car using the key, nothing. Put it in 5th, released the clutch, nothing. I managed to coast safely to the side of the road in neutral, and I popped the hood. It smelled heavily of clutch– later I realized this was due to my attempts to restart using 5th. I tried starting with the key, and the starter sounded like it really was trying, but couldn’t spin the engine. I put the car in 5th and tried just pushing it, and it reached a point where the engine just wouldn’t spin anymore, going either direction. So, does it sound like the engine is seized, or something else? There’s no hole in the block, so I didn’t throw a rod or anything, but it’s certainly possible there’s internal damage. What do you guys think?

Also, the shop I had it towed to is closed over the weekend, so I’m considering going there today and removing the oil pan just to see if there’s any metal chunks in it. Should I even bother?

Also seems Corolla tyres/rims are smaller than Volvo. Too bad :(
Cant you just recharge the car with R34a (or w/e it is) just as it is?
No you can’t, it’s not sold any longer. after the 95 model year all manufactures went to r134a as the refrigerent. Dealing with A/C is vary tricky and the coolant is highly toxic. He’s better off not running it and just rolling the windows down. A/C systems actually sap power and fuel from your engine to work. I have working a/c but I rarely use it; I just have the windows down.
Hell even in the minst of winter i got my windows down helps regulate the car with no working A/C the windows fog and ice up on the INSIDE in the winter I call people who depend on A/C wimps because its not even needed Hell i dont even have it as a option since it dont even work. My moms impala has ice cold working A/C but we never use it either.

Its awesome to see such a fan base for this car even on here. The Corolla is just a wicked sweet car if you get one made in the eightys. The battery I believe I was refurring to is a R type side post narrow bodied battery which is not a very common variant in cars.

lol true but as a semi-good knowledge at electronics from my understanding is if the battery meets the CCA for the car it will just work. Of course if your in a climate you dont have winter like CA the cheapest battery you can aquire will work just fine

So I got an email from the seller of the Volvo saying she had to stay late at work, and as such she missed the beginning of another appointment and could meet me at 8. I said “sure!” I did the diagnostics (really cool system actually) and fortunately everything checked out fine, so I handed over the cash, we signed the title, and now it’s sitting in my parking space. I was going to take some pics, but it was kind of dark out when I got back. She needs a good wash, but trust me, she’s a beaut! Very good condition for her age.

I already bought brake pads, which I’ll put on tomorrow morning, then I just need to get it insured and registered and I’ll be legal (but of course, I was completely 100% absolutely legal when I drove it home…). Then I’ll give it a wash and get some pics up here. I don’t know the blue book value, but honestly, it looks, feels, and runs like a car worth at least twice what I paid. Very, very happy with my purchase. (EDIT: I just checked KBB, and they don’t go back to 92, but a 93 with the same options as mine (minus sunroof and AC since they don’t work) in “good” condition is about $500 more than I paid. With A/C and sunroof it’s worth $775 more. And frankly I’d say condition is “very good,” which is $850 more.)

Is it really not produced anymore? Nuts, I’ll have to see what a conversion costs then….

Honestly, I hated my Corolla with a passion. The only saving grace was the 5spd. Mine was a 99, maybe that’s why? It was just so lifeless, dull, boring, uninspiring, bland. Clarkson explains it nicely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrU9xI8d8DI

I sent a PM about possibly buying the Corolla. If I could get it, I would start a thread with pics in the how to section about replacing the engine on these cars…. My personal best time is the engine out in 3.5 hours. If I take my time, I can do a complete engine swap in 10 hours… Lots of fun!

                  Cheers

                  Karl!

Reply sent. I think a how-to would be amazing, especially considering they’re such popular cars.

An update: she’s now insured and registered, so she’s completely legal! I already brought her to the car wash (my friend had a freebie), so she’s as dirty as ever (those things never seem to do a good job).

This morning I attempted to do a brake job. Imagine my surprise when I found plenty of pad left in the front. So, I bled all four brakes, and I believe it’s a tad better, but it’s still awful. The brakes work fine, but you need to push the pedal half to the floor first. So, I guess it’s master cylinder time. Shame. (Side rant: the bleeders in the front are 11mm for some unknown reason. I don’t have an 11mm wrench, just a socket. I now completely understand why a socket is not recommended.) Also, contrary to what my friend told me, the compressor does NOT engage when I press the button. I’ll check fuses of course, but I suspect a new compressor would be in order if I wanted working A/C. It would raise the value of the car by about a hundred bucks, but more importantly those black leather seats get HOT.

Anyhow, I’ve attached a few pics. What do you guys think? Should I have bought a Daewoo? 😆

Last pic is mine + my friend’s (he drove me all over the world for my search, thank you Chris!).

i’d buy a huffy before i bought a daewoo. no matter who’se badging its wearing.

Not a bad looking ride. it has potential. see if a junk yard has a working compressor for the AC, or look into aftermarket ones. If it was the same as a GM one, i’d drop ship you the spare one i have from a car i scrapped last year… for a nominal fee of course. Let me know if you want to drop a GM 5.0 into it, make you a great deal on a moderate mileaged engine WITh transmission.

Not bad, I have worked on volvo’s before, they last a really long time. Your engine is a single cam 8 valve. the one my parent’s had was the twin cam 16 valve. What year did you say it was? our’s was a 90 station wagon with over 218k before my parents killed it (put in oil they shouldn’t have) but all in all you found your self a cool little gem 🙂

Thanks! Is there even a possibility of it being the same as a GM one? I know Saabs during this period had a few parts in common with GMs, but Volvos, not so sure….

As much as I’d love to do a V8 swap (this thing has NO power), if I don’t think I could handle a straightforward Corolla engine swap, I can’t imagine trying to fit something never intended to be bolted in there

Oh, and the last flaw I noticed, broken antenna means I can only pick up one of my favorite stations. I have the remaining part, but rather than tape it on I think I’d better just get a new one. I can suffer without AC but not without me tunes 😛

Thanks! This is a 92. There’s a few notable improvements over my friend’s 87, such as the seatbelts come out of the shoulder part instead of the floor, there’s an airbag on the driver’s side, and the climate controls are better laid out, but some stupidity lingers such as a complete lack of cup holders

I have not ever seen it sold in parts stores. So unless you know a supplier or it’s black market, you can’t get the stuff any longer. r134a is starting to be phased out too, I wonder what will be next…

I would see how much it is to get it a small turbo..like say a 20mm turbo doing about 15 lbs of boost. It has no power because it only has a single cam 8 valve head.

you can only get r12 thru a dealer or a place like midas. i dont think they ever produced r12 for consumer purchase because of the toxiscity of it. and here i was rupturing ac lines to rip off pumps for more power on several vehicles when i was a kid.

i think some of the newest cars run the new stuff is it like 256 or something?

couldnt he do a head swap too to DOHC? i thought about doing it on my saturn along with a 5sp swap but i just hate the car so much that im not gonna bother and im just going to get a different car when i can.
