Did I Destroy My Engine?

Long story short, I was trying to accelerate hard in my 1999 Corolla, and I downshifted into 2nd at about 70 mph (didn’t realize how fast I was going). I watched as the tach instantly zipped up to 8k (redline is 6k), thought “oh shit”and kicked in the clutch again, but it was too late. The engine stalled. No bang or anything, just stalled. So, still going about 65 mph, I tried to restart the car using the key, nothing. Put it in 5th, released the clutch, nothing. I managed to coast safely to the side of the road in neutral, and I popped the hood. It smelled heavily of clutch– later I realized this was due to my attempts to restart using 5th. I tried starting with the key, and the starter sounded like it really was trying, but couldn’t spin the engine. I put the car in 5th and tried just pushing it, and it reached a point where the engine just wouldn’t spin anymore, going either direction. So, does it sound like the engine is seized, or something else? There’s no hole in the block, so I didn’t throw a rod or anything, but it’s certainly possible there’s internal damage. What do you guys think?

Also, the shop I had it towed to is closed over the weekend, so I’m considering going there today and removing the oil pan just to see if there’s any metal chunks in it. Should I even bother?
I would see how much it is to get it a small turbo..like say a 20mm turbo doing about 15 lbs of boost. It has no power because it only has a single cam 8 valve head.
They did do a turbo model, so it probably wouldn’t be as bad as the latest Mighty Car Mods episode, but if I were to do anything it would be a 5spd swap. My buddy’s brother did that on my buddy’s MR2 and it’s like a whole different car. (That car actually has the same ratios as the Corolla, but his final drive is so large he’s at about 4k RPM at highway speeds. Ouch.) I am going to miss my 5spd 🙁

couldnt he do a head swap too to DOHC? i thought about doing it on my saturn along with a 5sp swap but i just hate the car so much that im not gonna bother and im just going to get a different car when i can.
Nope, the 8 valve single cam and the 16 vlave dual cam are different sizes. and by the picture of the engine it wouldn’t fit.

Good and bad news. I spent much of the day at the junkyard, where I pulled a master cylinder and AC compressor off a car with 65k on the clock, as well as two switches for the sunroof and a motor for the same, and seven light bulbs for behind the dash (since I can’t for the life of me get the bulbs out of their holders). The good news is I replaced the switch (not the motor) and now my sunroof opens great! It almost closes great too, the visor that is supposed to go down at the end fails to do so, so I have to hold it down with my hand. Not a huge deal.

The bad news is out of those seven light bulbs, exactly one was functional.

The worse news is I replaced the master cylinder, and the brakes feel exactly the same. I’m not sure if I picked up a bad unit, or I need to bleed at the wheels again, or the problem is another component, or…?

In other news I got the AC system evacuated today (there was very little in it) in anticipation of installing the new compressor. Oh, and the good news there is I found a note in the owner’s manual stating the car has been converted to R134a some time in 2005. So I should be able to just swap in the compressor and dump in some cheap freon and be good to go.

are you sure thats not how the brakes are suppose to be? Brakes on my Daewoo have always been that way even new. As for the light bulbs, search the sites AndysAutoSport and AutoAnything, You can buy LEDs for the car you can replace every bulb (But the headlights) with LEDs. 🙂 You can take the old Master and the new one to AutoZone and have them test them for you they could tell you if its bad (or you can take it to a shop).
