Did I Destroy My Engine?

Long story short, I was trying to accelerate hard in my 1999 Corolla, and I downshifted into 2nd at about 70 mph (didn’t realize how fast I was going). I watched as the tach instantly zipped up to 8k (redline is 6k), thought “oh shit”and kicked in the clutch again, but it was too late. The engine stalled. No bang or anything, just stalled. So, still going about 65 mph, I tried to restart the car using the key, nothing. Put it in 5th, released the clutch, nothing. I managed to coast safely to the side of the road in neutral, and I popped the hood. It smelled heavily of clutch– later I realized this was due to my attempts to restart using 5th. I tried starting with the key, and the starter sounded like it really was trying, but couldn’t spin the engine. I put the car in 5th and tried just pushing it, and it reached a point where the engine just wouldn’t spin anymore, going either direction. So, does it sound like the engine is seized, or something else? There’s no hole in the block, so I didn’t throw a rod or anything, but it’s certainly possible there’s internal damage. What do you guys think?

Also, the shop I had it towed to is closed over the weekend, so I’m considering going there today and removing the oil pan just to see if there’s any metal chunks in it. Should I even bother?

i said they had the same bolt pattern. many, like you assume that means they can be interchangeable, WRONG. while the saturn has the same 4×100 bolt pattern, and a saturn’s wheels can fit on a honda, a honda’s stock wheels cannot fit a saturn without modification. therefore NOT interchangeable.
congrats on the new ride. 1992 cars were OBD-1 as in count the service engine blinks type. can you swipe the tires from your corolla? is 92 an R12 refrigerant system? if so you are in for a spendy charge.
Thanks! …assuming the CEL issue works out of course. Very annoyed by that.

I don’t know about swapping the tyres, but that’s certainly worth looking into since the Corolla tyres still have about 50k left on them (theoretically) and show no signs of dry rotting.

Seems it is indeed R12, but if I’m willing to wait until the end of summer when it’s no longer needed I can get it at a good price. Will continue to look into that….

And of course I can get new pads for ~$20. Even though I don’t plan to have the car too long I’ll invest the extra $5 in ceramics because, well, they’re brakes

a Saturn wheel can fit on a Daewoo shop said so. Why dont honda rims fit a saturn?

might be able to buy a conversion kit at your local parts store as well.

Because the center hub holes are too small on honda wheels. lugnuts are different too.

I’m looking into a conversion as well, but seems on this car I may have to replace the evaporator and condenser to do so. We’ll see.

Also seems Corolla tyres/rims are smaller than Volvo. Too bad 🙁

are the bolt patterns the same? i dont know anything about volvo, but if they bolt up and the center holes are the right size a little smaller diameter wont hurt anything but make your speedo off a bit.

Cant you just recharge the car with R34a (or w/e it is) just as it is?

Yes Toyota tires are very tiny, very important to check your tires on these cars as they run bald much faster then your normal standard vehicle. Also there battery is very strange and quite rare but I have found them at walmart a few times however its not a normal stock item.

The Corolla is 4×100, and the Volvo is 5×108. And of course I can’t just swap tyres because Volvo is 15″ and Corolla is 14″. Oh well.

Not exactly. From what I’m reading, at the very least I would have to have any remaining R12 removed professionally, and probably the oil removed as well. Then I could add new oil, new valves to both the high and low pressure sides, and R134a. HOWEVER, for this particular car I may also need to swap a couple of A/C parts, which could make it not worth it. We’ll see. Frankly I’m fine to just roll my windows down and cruise 🙂

I haven’t noticed any such problem on mine, but then again I don’t have the original tyres.

Really? When I replaced it I just grabbed a random $60 battery with the same specs as the previous one from Sears iirc.

4×100 huh? Sounds like those Toyoter rims would fit my woo 😀 Daewoo’s have 14 inch rims too

Sound like me 🙂 Believe it or not but the A/C in my Daewoo never worked. When the car was new it works atleast once but not more that 2 times then never worked again we had it recharged it worked just one time and never again. They said no leaks in the system so somethings going on there. Ive just rolled the windows down forever. In fact, when i picked up my car today i rolled the windows down because it was like a sauna in the car.

I think you have to replace all O-rings in the A/C, in some but not all cases the pump… Or else it would leak out over time, I think it’s because r134a has smaller molecules… oh, and you’ll have to replace Hi/Low valves…

I imagine the rare Toyota like battery is dependent on the location… If you asked they would probably be able to order it for you though… Some people will act like they can’t but that is just because they really don’t WANT to… So ask someone else banana: Of course you can only really do that if they have a lube center, some Walmart do and other don’t, if they don’t it’s a challenge… just do it online, lol…

No you can’t, it’s not sold any longer. after the 95 model year all manufactures went to r134a as the refrigerent. Dealing with A/C is vary tricky and the coolant is highly toxic. He’s better off not running it and just rolling the windows down. A/C systems actually sap power and fuel from your engine to work. I have working a/c but I rarely use it; I just have the windows down.
