Did I Destroy My Engine?

Long story short, I was trying to accelerate hard in my 1999 Corolla, and I downshifted into 2nd at about 70 mph (didn’t realize how fast I was going). I watched as the tach instantly zipped up to 8k (redline is 6k), thought “oh shit”and kicked in the clutch again, but it was too late. The engine stalled. No bang or anything, just stalled. So, still going about 65 mph, I tried to restart the car using the key, nothing. Put it in 5th, released the clutch, nothing. I managed to coast safely to the side of the road in neutral, and I popped the hood. It smelled heavily of clutch– later I realized this was due to my attempts to restart using 5th. I tried starting with the key, and the starter sounded like it really was trying, but couldn’t spin the engine. I put the car in 5th and tried just pushing it, and it reached a point where the engine just wouldn’t spin anymore, going either direction. So, does it sound like the engine is seized, or something else? There’s no hole in the block, so I didn’t throw a rod or anything, but it’s certainly possible there’s internal damage. What do you guys think?

Also, the shop I had it towed to is closed over the weekend, so I’m considering going there today and removing the oil pan just to see if there’s any metal chunks in it. Should I even bother?

well you can get a brand new Chevy Aveo (Daewoo Kalos) for like 10k πŸ˜€ more dependable than toyota anyday :D
Those are even worse! The daewoo was okay, I liked it, even though it was slow, and the tranny thought it was cool to slip at only 80,000 miles, it was a little fun, then chevy made it heavier when they bought daewoo out, and it was like… junk… Thank god they replaced it with the new sonic! But I wouldn’t consider any GM reliable with the exception of a few cars they’ve made…

Toyotas are reliable because unlike many companies they polish the same already reliable turd for decades…
The Chevy Sonic is a Daewoo too so is the 2010 buick Lacrosse so is the Chevy Volt so is the Chevy Cruze

Daewoo isnt victim of mass recalls they dont have a Sudden Runaway Acceleration issue either.
It’s hard for a television set to have a runaway acceleration πŸ˜›

Seriously though, my Corolla is old enough to have a mechanical throttle so that isn’t an issue. Frankly there’s actually very little to go wrong. It has just two air bags, no ABS, no traction control, and the world’s only aftermarket cassette player. It’s been a very reliable little car. And I still hate it. It’s just so… lifeless. Unfortunately it’ll be up to economics to dictate its fate.

No recalls maybe but head gaskets and ball joints and trim that falls off. Besides, they don’t have enough power to runaway or break anything.

Daewoos have mechanical accelerators too. mine just has 2 airbags (disabled but airbags nonetheless) i got no traction control no ABS (though ABS was a option) and is the only Daewoo with a GoGear MP3 Player πŸ˜€

My Daewoo is almost 14yrs old never had a head gasket issues it uses no oil at all i dont even have any trim on mine (2000 was the last model year to have that) Ball joints are perfect. And mines got tons of power for a lil 4 banger. I can do burnouts with ease and when i floor it it roars like a motorcycle and no the ORIGINAL Muffler is not going bad. I DO have a mild Misfire though nothing a set of Autolite Copper Plugs cant fix πŸ˜€

Burn outs in a daewoo… lol… the old oil on the tires works everytime πŸ˜› I bet your CV joints love it :stick:

Honestly dude… 14 years and no problems isn’t that big of a deal, it’s the miles that really start the counting…

Okay, I never thought this would turn into a Daewoo-vs-the-world argument.

Sorry to disappoint, but if the Corolla doesn’t turn out to be worth saving, I won’t be buying a Daewoo. I’ll get something that is $1000 and can be resold easily. My friend is talking me into a 94 Camry V6 w/5spd, and if one becomes available in my area that’s probably the route I’ll go.

Regardless of whether Daewoos are good cars or not, fact is they don’t sell quickly, and I need something that’ll sell quickly so I can swap it for something I actually want when I have more money at the end of the summer.

Well yes, I don’t expect I could get a car from a dealer for $1k. I would expect I could negotiate something like this or this down to $1k (I’m pretty good at negotiating– I once bought a Porsche for $300). Not 5spd, but V6 at least.

We used to have a demo dealer, all cars were sold at $500, flat price… Nothing there was worth more than 2-300 though, but I guess it would have saved you from having to dig them up…

Ah, we always used old oil…

Yeah, I don’t mess with dealers for used cars though, if you look around you can actually get a nice lanos for less than $1000, I almost bought one in MINT with only 89k for $600 a while back the tranny was shot and I had no way to tow it and I sure as heck wasn’t going to drive it home in 1st gear, it’d take me like 2 days…

With 3k though you can get a good focus with a duratech or Zetec motor, cd player, good tires, ATX or MTX-75, working A/C they are allot more fun than a lanos so long as you don’t have an SPI engine, in witch case run away… FAST… Just depends on how you want to spend it I guess…

Meh, if I had 3 grand I’d get a late ’90s-early decade Buick Park Avenue Ultra. Indestructible 3.8L supercharged engine putting out 240hp, easily increased by dropping pulley sizes and a few mods such as intercooler, U-bend exhaust delete, etc, all in the body of a complete grandpa’s car. The ultimate sleeper :cheer:

Lol, go for it, I paid $1200 for mine at 109,xxx miles, I could have gotten it for less, but decided it was low enough, 18-43mpg depending on how I drive and whether I use A/C or not. Obviously 18mpg is blazing through hills running between 3k and 5k rpm (redline 7100) banana:

If I had the money though I’d have a supercharged buick to, but I can’t afford the gas πŸ˜›

Fords are only good when they new once they hit the big 10 thats when Fords live up to their F.O.R.D namesake.

Lanos with a bad tranny at 89k? must of beat the shit outta it i burnout with mine drive 60 in 30mph zones (one time long empty street just for the hellofit) tranny going strong in fact other than the brakes and the thermostat never a single problem

Nah, only some fords, The zetec engine has proven bulletproof, I’ve seen them at almost 300,000 miles… But like I said to run away from the SPI very fast, engine WILL drop a valve seat! It could be 60,000 miles, it could be 150,000 miles, but it WILL drop a valve seat, no way around it!

Heck even honda has there years, the 2006 and 2007 civic have problems with cracking engine block, it’s not the company, it’s the car… even chevy sometimes makes some nice cars.
