I’m getting a knock sensor code (p325) and a two way catalyst code (p420).

Around two weeks ago I was getting major hesitation. One time I kept driving the truck until I got home. When I opened the hood, the catalytic converter was very hot. To fix the hesitation problem, I replaced the distributor. My truck drove fine for two weeks. The check engine light came on today with the codes mentioned above.

Before the distributor was replaced, I was getting misfire codes (cylinder 1 and var. cylinders) and knock sensor. I figured the knock sensor went off due to the misfire. Now, I’m getting alternating codes between p325 and p420 without the misfire.

When I installed the distributor, I just tried to match where the rotor was (new and old). I’ve read that ignition timing can trigger the p420 code. I’m debating on whether to purchase a timing light or rent one. Does anyone know how to test the catalytic converter? What are your thoughts?

I know I wouldn’t trust myself eyeballing the distributor.

What I did was make a reference mark on the old distributor and the new distributor. I made the mark when the rotor was at cylinder one point. I then removed the distributor and installed the new one where it was at the same point. It seemed to line back up fine.

I was watching one of Eric’s videos on knock sensors. The live data on his actron obdii meter shows ignition timing. I think I have a 9180 scanner. Does this meter have the ability to check timing? If so, can one adjust timing based on the meter, or do I need to get a timing light?

I did some checking and what I heard was timing light. The thing is, do I believe it? Anyway, with computerized vehicles, there is always a procedure one needs to follow.

As for the cat, I remember watching a Danner Scanner video where they were tying to diagnose a misfire without killing the cat. So, maybe it is easy to do.
