I have about $300 worth of tools. They’re all used and abused so there’s a decent amount. Very little new stuff. I’m a DIYer and can do about anything with what I have besides the odd jobs like alignments, rotor turning, tire mount/ dismount, so on and so forth.

Anyway, I recently did a head gasket on a friends Cobalt and that, unfortunately, kicked my 1/2″ and 3/8″ socket sets @$$.

So, with the money from that, I’m planning on getting a new set. (My first new tool set I’ve ever had.)

I’m making $450 for the job and think I’ve found a good set, the only thing is I don’t know how Dewalt automotive tools can do. I love their construction tools though.

This is the set I’m looking to buy:

      • Will it be good enough for my needs?
      • Is it a decent price?
      • And finally, is there another company you guys recommend for my needs?

My suggestion to use is to go to pawn shops, estate sales, craigs list, and ebay. You are by far better off to get quality tools that way. Anything now a days that is a large set is built so cheaply it is not worth it.

In all honesty I have yet to come across a good chrome set any more that is not Matco, Snap-On, or Mac based. Old craftsman usa made sets were great but, the new stuff is a waste of metal just like the DeWalt is.

There is no one really good fit all set that is not very expensive. This would be a good start KD Tools KDT 80942 That is Gearwrench just under a different name made in the same factory. I would suggest Craftsman 41 pc Screwdriver Set (Only if USA Made) Neiko® 10288A Master Hex Bit Socket Set, S2 Steel | 32-Piece Set | SAE and Metric Neiko® 10070A Torx Bit Socket and External Torx Socket Set | 35-Piece Set | S2 and Cr-V Steel

Yeah, GW was a subsidiary of KD Tools, and now both are owned by the Apex Tool Group. I recently purchased a KD set, and everything was labelled or stamped GW.

I recently purchased old snap on tools from a retired mechanic. Found them on CL then looed at them in person already knowing what new would cost. I am more than happy to have some old quality tools now. With that being said I purchaseda small metric/standard set of kobalt tools from lowes for about $60 and so far I am happy. Good Luck

This is the small Lowes/Kobalt set that is really handy as it has shallow and deep well sae/metric sockets.

I purchased a set of those Neiko hex sockets and they are fantastic. I have been using them on impacts and I have yet to break or round the corners off of them. They fit the fasteners exactly with no slop at all.

I have been using an assortment of Kobalt tools from Lowes. While they are not top of the line they seem to be decent for the price for the average DIY project. I have not broken or damaged any of the sockets or ratchets I have from them and they have seen some abuse as i slowly work on my project car and various everyday repairs.

I also recommend the 25″ breaker bar from harbor freight. For $10 its really a nice piece to have for some of the more stubborn fasteners.
