Hello everyone. Slight issues with a friends vehicle and I am no expert when it come to automatic transmissions.

      Vehicle: 2009 or 2007? Ford Escape 4×4

Complaint: car would not shift to second gear. Had to get towed. When I attempted to verify the problem it drove pretty decent. Twice it would have a delayed shift to second gear. Shifted to second right around 4,000 rpm. Occasionally the abs light and traction control light would come on. Problem is intermittent. Car drove fine otherwise.

Owners told me they just had it inspected a few days before the issue happened. Mechanic said there were no issues with the vehicle.

I know these vehicles had issue with cracked or broken toner rings. My first step is going to see if I can pull the abs codes if any. My question is, I always thought a toner ring/abs sensor ring would cause abs malfunction. Could it also cause a shifting issue? Any other ideas?

It’s more likely that because of the transmission issue and the codes it’s generating, the ABS computer is taking the traction control offline because there is a powertrain fault. If the power can’t be delivered to the wheels normally, traction control will not work properly. Some cars do this and some don’t, and I don’t know about that particular car. Some cars that do this will not actually have a ABS code but the lights will go off when the CEL is cleared, and some will have a code that basically says there’s a powertrain fault present. But because I am generally a Ford avoider, I’m afraid that’s about the limit of useful information I can provide.

Ok a small update. This vehicle is an hour away from me fyi. I took a better look at it.

          – fluid level is a hair low bot overall fine. Doesn’t smell burnt and appears to be in good shape

          – tone ring on front drivers side is broken.

          – throwing a C1233 (left front wheel speed sensor input signal missing) – broken tone ring I imagine

          – after a small drive I got another code ; u0414 (invalid data received from four wheel drive clutch control module) – no idea what this means. Will do a google search shortly.

A few notes:: vehicle would not drive efficiently (ie noise, grinding, kinda as if abs was kicking in) vehicle drove Better after stability control was turned off. From a standstill – vehicle takes off fine but hesitates on the 1-2 shift. It doesn’t wanna shift unless your over 3.5/4k rpm and you let off the gas pedal. Any ideas?

at least some help. No doubt someone else had that issue before.

And it does not look like you/they will be able to bypass transmission shop or dealer on this. U codes are that way.

Just an update for anyone with the same issue. Shop said it was an issue with a band in the transmission. $2000 to fix.

ABS sensors have nothing to do with the transmission operation. The other code you posted might indicate the problem. According to your last post, it seems to have something to do with the 2nd gear band. At first what you described sounded electrical. If it drove fine before, then I was thinking it might be an electrical issue. However if the shop said it’s an internal transmission problem, there really is little you can do besides rebuild or replace. More info here.
