Hi — I’m replacing the front pads on a 2012 Civic –53k miles– with Centric ceramic pads. The rotors are perfectly fine — do I need to deglaze them (and if so, why)? If not, should I do the usual break-in with a half-dozen 40 mph near-stops?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Assuming you measured the rotors for thickness and checked for run out and they are OK, then you can knock the glaze off with 120 grit sandpaper and do the normal bedding procedure.

A DIYer can do what they want with brake rotors during a pad replacement.

A proper brake job performed by a shop means checking rotors for runout and parallelism and servicing them by surfacing or replacing them.
